My beautiful baby got hit with a big rock - I'm concerned that if I take her to Safelite (as insurance suggests) that they'll replace with crappier quality glass or be unable to calibrate.

And I'm concerned that if I take her to the Dealership I'll get excessive charges.

So...thoughts? Safelite ok? Or should I suck it up and go to the dealer and deal with potential out of pocket costs.

I did call my insurance, they told me I can take it to the dealer but it may not all be covered - I'll have to submit an itemized claim for them to approve or not.

Why don't you get quotes for both. Tacoma isn't exactly a Bentley Azure when it comes to windshield glass.

Sorry to hear about that - I've heard good/bad/ and ugly about Safelite. I'd go with OEM at the dealer.

Back when I lived in Colorado and got a new windshield like once or twice a year because the gravel on the highways would destroy them I think the second replacement windshield I had was a Pilkington before Safelite switched over to the more obvious Chinese manufacturer FUYAO.

The Pilkington glass had a distortion that ran all the way across the windshield approximately 1/3 of the way up which made the cars ahead of you look like they were entering hyperspace.

Safelite must have been aware of this issue because when I brought it in they pretended they couldn’t see it. Not that it mattered, because it chipped and cracked and was gone after a few months.

Recently had to do the same, caught a rock on the highway and had to get a replacement.

Insurance would only cover basic glass and "upgrade" to OEM was going to be about $400 more and require all kinds of dumb hoops like having a service tech meet me at my place of work and then taking it to Toyota for recalibration.

I went ahead and took the easy path and had safelite replace with their glass and they recalibrated the safety sensor at their shop. Job took about 2 hours and the replacement glass has a little more lensing at the curves than the OEM did but overall it's good clarity and there haven't been any sensor issues or leaking. My primary concern is pitting with cheap safelite glass so we'll see how she stands up to that, but so far so good.

Lot .ore to worry about Safelite then, calibration and glass quality. They f'd up install three time, be not placing windshield in correctly. Twice to low, weather strip at top, not contacting roof and Vin number was half covered. Not my choice to use them. It was auto body shop. Plus side moldings installed crooked. I say stay away from them hacks.

I got a quote/estimate from Safelite on 5/15/23 for my 2021. It was $830.00 for non OEM. I'm waiting for now. The crack doesn't impair my vision of the road.

I had mine replaced at Safelite and have had no problems. It even survived a 3,400 mile round trip to the Blade Show in Atlanta last week. I heard several " hits" to the glass, but no cracks.

Safelite did mine, and calibrated it. No problems, except for the dash cam. The double sided tape they used did not last. I still haven't found a suitable replacement.

No issues with Safelite on mine. I don't have anything to calibrate...really just depends on if you get a good tech or not.

I'd stay away from safelite. The glass is whatever but it's the process that will cause an issue down the road. During the removal process, a lot of times they will scratch the paint from the window dam which is pretty normal. The problem is they are suppose to use primer over the scratches to prevent rust but instead they just glob a bunch of urethane and hope that will be enough.
Funny thing is, if you do happen to get rust around the window dam due to their lack of proper repair and need another windshield replaced in the future, they will reject the job and tell you to fix the rust before they can install a new windshield.
I work in the auto body industry and see a lot of cars with this problem. I live in California where things will rust but much slower compared to other states.
I would recommend calling your adjuster and request another shop besides safelite or call local auto glass shops around your area and see if they work with your insurance company.

Thanks, good info - I'm getting a few quotes this morning. Based on this - I'm leaning towards paying out of pocket and staying away from Safelite.
