Any reason to assume/believe that the 2022 Tacomas are more reliable than the earlier years?
I'm def a layman in regards to mechanical issues and engines in general. I just purchased a 2022 and some of these forum threads are a little concerning.

Stop reading the forums and post about engine problems.

Enjoy your truck. It has a warranty.
If it makes it through the warranty period, chances are it will be fine.

Keep in mind it also depends on how you treat it. People that go off-roading tilting the truck at a 90 degree angle tend to leave out those details when they say their engine blew up.

It is human nature to complain more than praise. If your 2022 is your first Toyota product, talk to your friends that own Toyotas. I am willing to bet that will put your mind at ease.

I bought my Tacoma brand new 2-28-2017 without test driving any Tacoma, only sat in two. I bought it since many friends owned Tacomas and have enjoyed the ride as of 54,xxx miles so far.

Tacoma doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be better than the rivals. If you think 2GR-FKS is problematic, just look at what engines they put in other mid-sized trucks these days, you'll come right back to Tacoma

Manufacturers are trying to produce what they can, when they can, throughout the recent supply-chain issues, while being forced to re-source some components through secondary and tertiary suppliers. Not sure how quality would have improved.

Toyota sells 200k of these a year, don’t let a handful of problems concern you.

My brand new 1992 Toyota 4X4 truck blew a head gasket while under warranty. Also blew a head gasket again out of warranty. Toyota and the dealership fixed it a no charge to me the second time. Still loved that 3.0, 5spd, 150 HP truck for 14 awesome years. Never left me stranded. Bought my 3 gen without test driving it. Only Knew what I wanted trim wise and had to be a DCLB. No regrets and plan for the long haul which may include a possible significant breakdown. Hopefully not but shit happens. If you want to really enjoy your truck stay off the internet.

I think the 3.0 3vz-e v6 was one of the few toyota engines to have problems.

The 3.5 has been around a long time, in a bunch of different models. There are a lot of them out there.

It's only had one small recall in 2017, and there are millions of them in the wild on many toyota models. A handful of posts on a big global forum are meaningless anecdotes, you would need to look at rates of engine failure. I don't think we have that data.

Just to put it into perspective, the engine is used in:
    2015–present Toyota Tacoma
    2015–2020 Lexus GS 350
    2015–2022 Lexus RX 350
    2017–present Lexus LS 350
    2017–2019 Toyota Highlander
    2017–2020 Toyota Sienna
    2017–present Toyota Camry
    2018–present Toyota Alphard
    2018–2022 Toyota Avalon
    2018–present Lexus IS 350
    2018–present Lexus ES 350
    2018–present Lexus RC 350
    2019–2022 Toyota Highlander
    2020–present Lexus LM 350

EDIT: Edited to reflect the recall, thanks poster below

While it's irrelevant to OP's question (since Toyota remedied the problem and it didn't recur), to say that the 2GR-FKS never had a recall isn't technically correct:

By the way my 2017 has no recall work for my vin besides third brake light which mine doesnt leak. I have over 166k mi . Truck is lifted, been road tripped multiple times example Washington state to grand Canyon and back. Wife and I went to from Washington state to Moab and did trails for 10 days and drove home no worries . I keep up on general maintenance and when its close to parts to be replaced due to wear and usage change it , why wait for parts to fail . I keep up on 5k oil changes the life of my truck . I daily drive my Tacoma, most of time 100+ miles a day for work . I'm in construction so job sites change all the time . Driving somewhere different every week , sometimes every other day. Anywho I can say my 06/17 Tacoma TRD off-road double cab short box automatic is reliable and i take good care of it cause it was my first new truck ever.

In the grand scheme of things it looks like you’re very highly unlikely to encounter an issue. But if you do, it could be expensive if you’re out of warranty. If it were me and I was dead set on a tacoma, I’d consider an extended warranty.

I’m definitely curious to see what comes of this p11 code/cylinder failed compression issue that’s been going around this forum the last few weeks with multiple people needing major engine repairs. There might be some correlation to having the fuel pump recall based on people’s comments but not certain on that. As an owner of a 21’ I’d also hope this issue won’t pop up since this almost exclusively seems to be effecting 2017-2020 trucks, but if this is just now occurring for people toyota may not have done anything to correct it on our newer models. I’m currently doing two things, pricing extended warranties and looking at other brands of trucks. If more people keep having this issue over the next year I’ll probably bail on the Tacoma or just go straight for the 4th gen but hey that’s a crapshoot too
