Do the new 3.5l Tacoma engines still come with a plastic oil filter housing or did Toyota finally fit the aluminum one as stock?

    thanks,

Nothing wrong with the composite ones. Its when you use the wrong wrench tool, you can crack the ears on them causing leaks, or some moron decides their not threaded in tight enough.

Proper tools make all the difference. Heineken helps.

Heineken sucks. I think its stale by the time we get it. Beer shouldn't smell, or taste skunky. I'll agree on the tools.

When I saw the housing on my 2018, I was surprised. But having a plastic housing is good if the housing is accidentally crossthreaded on, the external threads on plastic housing will be harmed, not the internal threads on the metal part attached to the engine. Replacing the housing will be cheaper than the metallic part. It would be difficult to cross thread the installation, but possible. As others have stated . . . have a removal tool where the 6 'ears/tabs' on the housing engage in 6 notches on the tool. Have a torque wrench to only install it to the torque value stated on the filter box (its on Toyota boxes, I have yet to use another manufacturers filter). Remember to change the big O ring on the housing and lubricate it with oil. Also change the smaller O ring at the housing drain plug, if you use the plug to drain the housing.

I'm sure it has been discussed at length somewhere on this forum, but this filter / housing design is genuinely craptastic. Why couldn't they just do it like the 4.0's?? And yes, I have both a 4.0 Taco and 3.5 (Highlander).

I've even been recommended to spray the oil filter housing threads with silicon before installing it.

Nothing wrong with the OE plastic housing. If something becomes wrong with it, well, that will likely be preceded by something stupid. Aluminum housings are not necessary. Common sense is.

There is no excuse for it not being on the top of the engine.

There is a hard stop once the surfaces meet so it is pretty easy to tell when to stop tightening......unless of course you are driving it home with an impact like some quick lubes or dealers do.

I think toyota engineers put it on the bottom so these engines wouldn't have oil starvation upon start up. They think by having it on top, the oil can drain back into the pan leaving the filter void of any oil which toyota has claimed in the past it created some engine issues when you go to start them. They want immediate lubrication to happen.

Plastic. Just used a Motivx tool - made very well and works great w/no slippage.

I have had my Audi for 12 years (90K miles) and it has a plastic housing/cartridge set up, it is inverted on top of the engine - no leaks, no problems. Oil drain is solved by non-drain mechanism in the filter or the mounting housings. No sure why Toyota thought this was an issue knowing that there is a simple solution.

This. I took my truck in for an oil change a couple weeks ago to a shop I know and trust. This was the 2nd time in my life I did not DIY and they used an inch pound torque wrench on the housing and even commented on being careful with it. The problem is the people and shops who do not care.

There are decades of engines out there with top mount oil filters without starvation issues.

If only you had been there to tell Toyota when they were designing the gr2s. Oh well to late to change it now.;)
