Getting an intermittent rattling noise at idle. Anyone ever heard this before? Is it normal?

Just watched the vid. The chatter is normal but that intermittent noise that spikes every few seconds isn’t.

That intermittent noise almost sounds like a plug wire shorting to ground. Hard to tell from the video
Also the injector cleaning cycle is quite noisy as well. As I understand it, that should only happen at, or near idle.

    Really don't hear much. I've heard a lot noisier 3.5 tacoma's.

It is like the sound of a diesel, with none of the benefits.

Yeah, it's weird with these engines. Some sound like they have bad lifters, or with pistons in a loose bore.

When I bought mine, asked the salesman is that right!? It is a lot louder than my old truck.

“yep, supposed to sound like that” ahh ok… hoping to get at least 300K out of it, that amount of noise when new worries me.

The audio quality is not the best.

Does the sound resonate from one side of the engine?

Does it get louder or quieter when you increase the revs?

What happens when you put it in gear?

    How about under load?

It sounds like an exhaust leak but as I say... the audio quality isn't the best... it could also just be the injector noise that these engines have...

Seems to only do it at idle after starting. No noise while under load or acceleration. I have noticed it doesnt do it after driving to work and letting it idle. Sounds like its coming from within the engine after hearing it with the hood open this morning. Truck drives fine with no noticeable differences.

I had that rattle sound right before my AC compressor clutch went. After replacing the AC clutch, the sound went away but came back after a couple thousand miles. Second time it was a loose bolt on the radiator fan.

Maybe check the belt driven accessories for play.

Just stumbled on this thread from a few months ago. My new 23 is making the same same noise when my truck is almost warmed up after idling. It's a random hollow tick/ pop noise. I can faintly hear it in this video. You have to really listen for it but the sound comes randomly. Sometimes it's one tick, sometime it's a couple. Goes away after the truck has been drivin and only at idle.

Listened again this morning and it only does it for a few mins during certain temp when warming up. Most people would probably never hear it.

If you take it to the dealer (I'm assuming your truck is still under warranty) there will be one of three possible outcomes:

    a) We don't hear anything (aka cannot duplicate the issue)
    b) We hear it, but it's normal
    c) We hear it, it's not normal, but the repair isn't covered under warranty because (insert your favorite lame ass excuse here)

There must be something magical about a Toyota dealership service department because whenever you pull into one, every problem you're having with your truck becomes normal. That is until your warranty is up, then stuff you didn't even know was wrong goes wrong.

haha yup. Been through this with other brands. They won't really do much with a random noise if it's not causing any issue. Truck idles smooth and runs great. getting 20mpg. Did my first oil change at 1500 miles and now at 2500.

Just heard the noise the other day but truck runs perfect. Almost sounds like the noise you get when a motor is cooling down. Like the noise of metal contracting or expanding. Seems to come right from where the thin tin like manifold covers are. Sounds like someone is tapping them with a screw driver.

I would check for rocks on the heat shield and skid plate . And check bolts on skid plate . That does not sound normal . My truck does not make that noise at all .
