    Ok,
I have a bran new (4 months) Tacoma crew cab. Nothing special, but I am in love with it. However, yesterday when it was 105 degrees, the air conditioning stopped working. I was stopped when I noticed the air conditioner was blowing hot air.
So I was happy with the fact that my truck was new and it would be under warranty.
The first thing out of the associate who was helping was “Well, it may be something you have to pay for and that will not be covered by Toyota.” Completely baffled I asked him what he was talking about. He said that If a pebble or something jumped into the enginecompartment and punctured the airconditioning lines, I would be liable….
I am still baffled, but has anyone had anything like this happen to their brand new Tacoma?

Welcome and get used to it lol Toyota dealerships suck and they are always going to be trying to blame you for things that should be warranty.

I remember some people having this issue where the AC stopped working in extreme heat when stopped or in traffic. I don't remember the solution though I think it was a TSB with an extra fan or something. Search the site for it.

There's a TSB for hotter areas, where the dealer will install an electric fan on the condenser for free.

My condenser in my taco took a shit around 25k it happens. I wouldn’t worry too much with the service advisor being a dick. If you think they are gonna be a problem just take it somewhere else.

It's not just Toyota. Damage after manufacturer is not covered by anyone's warranty. However, the likelihood that that scenario happened is so low I don't even know why she bothered mentioning it.

But yes, OP, there is a TSB for it. These trucks don't have electric fans anywhere in the engine compartment so in hotter areas they tend to suffer if you aren't moving. The TSB installs an electric fan. I believe there is a thread on it as well.

On that note, several people reported having overheating issues in the same conditions when off roading. I.e. working the engine hard at low RPMs so the fan can't spool up and very little actual airflow. There's a thread on here to address that too where someone made a conversion to run an electric fan on the radiator and remove the engine driven fan.

In the meantime, welcome to TW! Also, if you hit "quote" in the bottom right, the person you're responding to will get a notification.

If that's the first thing a dealership says when you approach them with an issue, find a new dealership.

I just talk to the dealership about this very same problem on my 2021 and they said that there’s nothing I can do about it right now

I noticed a bit of the same thing this last weekend. Was 115 outside and truck sat in parking lots at a few stores. On the way home it seemed I hit every read light and the truck was just not cooling down quickly. Once I hit a run of over a mile with no stopping I could tell the difference. Just no air moving over the condenser is what I kept telling my wife.

that TSB would be nice but doesn’t look to cover 2021s

    This!!!

I refuse to use our local Toy dealer even tho they are the only game in town. Ordered and took delivery of a new Taco from a dealer 2+ hours away that is 1000% more responsive, don't mind the drive for service. Look around, there are honest dealers out there.

After a day with my 2021 Tacoma, the dealer said that it was a definite defect of the condenser. I am now on day six, they finally gave me. Loaner a day ago, I have already spent $300 on a rental. This will probably come out to be some kind of defect in the near future.

You might try contacting Toyota corporate. If you explain the problem to them politely they may help you with a loaner vehicle or offer some kind of reimbursement partial or whole. Maybe you'll get something else out of it? It doesn't hurt to ask as the worst they can say is no. Also, you might try contacting your service manager to see if they can offer a rental. Also a stretch, but wondering if a rental vehicle would be covered under comprehensive car insurance? Maybe not.

For what it's worth, I've been in your shoes in a similar situation with my 2017. A few years ago the blower motor wheel stripped out on the a/c and no air would come out of the vents. The truck only had a few thousand miles on it. It happened in the middle of summer here in AZ and it was well over 110. To say I was pissed would be an understatement.

It took a few calls to a few dealers as the part was back ordered and only one dealer near me happened to have it. I got the same ridiculous response from several service departments expecting me to drive the truck with no ac in 110-120 degree heat while the part was unavailable in the middle of summer. I didn't care if they had to harvest the part out of a new truck on the lot.

Toyota eventually issued a tsb with a redesigned part (thanks Toyota :boink:) and it was eventually replaced again with the new part around a year later.

Call Toyota and try to get them to reimburse you for the rental.

You maybe approaching the limits of modern compressor based A/C systems :bananadead:
I believe its somewhere around 130-135*F but it is a diminishing effect way before that

The dealers suck....any problems just tell them you will call corporate and deal with them. BS the service tech would even bring up a customer paying for the air conditioner on a 4 month old truck without even looking at it. I probably would have laughed at him if he said that to me.
