Got a 2021 OR this past a February. Noticed while spraying down the underbody(after a snow storm) the frame is already starting to rust. That of concern to me? Still under Toyota care, but a $7 dollar can of some rustolieum seems easier.
    Thoughts?

The frame will likely rust out in 10 years just like the last 30 years of Toyota trucks. Use some rust preventative coatings to try to avoid that.

The timing cover oil leak kicks in about 25k miles and will spray the frame dowm

CRC is good stuff. I use 2 to 3 cans of that and Fluid film each fall on my frame. 2017 and my frame is damn near perfect

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I have a bit of salt environment here on the central coast of CA. Nothing like you guys in the salt belt but I've seen lots of older local trucks rotting away due to exposure on the beach and dunes. I hit mine with WoolWax (black) at 4 months old. Might as well be safe rather than sorry.

Also, don't use paint that will cover up existing rust unless it is of a type that is truly reactive or converting in nature. Otherwise, rust will continue underneath until years down the road when it flakes off, you'll be looking at rot. It's more important to coat the inside channels and crevices than the outside. I think it was common for the warrantied frames to start inside and it doesn't rear its ugly head till it reaches outside!

All things steel rusts, just a fact of life. Fluid Film it once or twice a year and this will be minimized.

Take a wire brush to the rust and spray with rustoleum. Then fluid film/wool wax before the winter

Not to blow your minds but typically frames rust from the inside out. All your external cures won't address the problem you fear.

OP, where do you live? Do they use salt or mag chloride on the roads? If so, one thing to be sure of is you need to keep the undercarriage clean. Run through a carwash undercarriage sprayer after each storm has dried up, or get an undercarriage attachment for your pressure washer like I did.

Good thing it's a c-channel frame! They drain and dry out quick! At least here in CO...

But again, it's mostly an open channel frame, it shouldn't be that hard to wash it right? The sections that are fully boxed are where you really have to be worried about rusting from the inside, as you've rightly said.

Didn’t want to delete my post. Trying to edit on an iPhone. Rust will find a home no matter what. The quality of the steel is what matters most. Second to that is internal treatment wherever it’s boxed.

This is my favorite brand of cosmoline. Seems less watery than the others. But if u live in an area that gets warm, be careful. I’ve had a few cans leak their contents out.

Except not much of the Tacoma frame is boxed, and the boxed part can be sprayed inside w/o excessive effort.

Rust is a chemical reaction from water, oxygen, and steel. Preventing moisture and oxygen from getting there definitely does help, no matter where it's prone to start.

I sprayed my 2020 with fluid film before the 1st pennsylvania winter. I'm in the southern part of the state but they still salt here and pretreat with brine too for the last few years. when I redid it this fall there was no rust and in some places still some product left.

Doing something whether you like cosmoline or other lanolin/petroleum products like fluid film, wool wax, or PB blaster surface shield. something is better than nothing. The only thing is if you start with something like fluid film its probably easier to stay with it because you would have to thoroughly wash it off to switch to cosmoline. there is also Krown rust prevention where you can have them do it yearly for about $150
