2020 TRD Pro Wheel Center Caps are GARBAGE

i got a set of 2020 Pro wheels from Toyota early February. Just putting the center caps on broke some of the clips that hold the tention wire that hold the center caps on. Then taking them off to get new tires today broke even more. It looks like new center caps will be needed after removing the caps just two times smh. Thats going to get costly for as long as i have these wheels

 

Having never seen these wheels in person and liking the overall look of them. I did not like that the center cap was designed the way that it is. The traditional round center cap would have been a better design.

 

Had the same happen to me. You have to be deliberate when you are pushing them in. Make sure they are even all around, rather than one part of the circle much higher than any other.
Also lost a letter. Bought a new one on Ebay for $21 rather than argue with the dealer.

I used a flat head screwdriver to lift under. You can use a pick or a non-marring trim tool. They come off pretty easy. The spring wire that holds them in is not too stiff.

 

Mine are broke too. I ended up snapping off one tab on each and they go on easier now and haven’t had any issues with them coming loose.

 

Yeah you can get by with one or two tabs broke depending on which are broke. Spring is held by 4 so i turned my spring to 4 fresh clips.

In total ive had to replace all 4 caps now. Had to replace 2 after taking em off twice and then 2 more after 3 times removing em

 

Biggest problem is everywhere thinks you have to remove caps to remove the lugnuts/wheels and you dont. Socket fits just fine without removing

If you take all the springs off the caps the problem would be solved. They will go in a lot easier and without breaking any clips.

 

This has been a long time issue. These come broken from factory and most reputable tire shops know about this problem.

 

Bumping this old thread to get more feedback on the issue with the center caps.

I noticed that one of my center caps was loose so I pulled it off and re-adjusted. The metal ring was pushed up against one of the tabs which looks like it already has a stress fracture and is on the verge of breaking.

Has anyone else tried popping off all the metal rings on their center caps and reinstalling them? Has this fixed the issue?

That design doesnt look well thought out. The standard round caps are way better. Just be super careful putting them on or taking them off unless you like spending $$$.

I broke a couple tabs on my first attempt installing a center cap. I assumed that I needed to line it all up and push straight down. My wheel was laying flat in my garage and not on the truck yet. I was wrong. I shot a clip across the garage. I changed strategy for the other three center caps and it worked much better. If it’s helpful, I had success setting one side(ish) of the clips first and then slowly and carefully guiding the rest into their slots. This worked better than trying to line up and pound into place. Good luck. At least the caps aren’t that expensive. It would be easier to remove the metal ring but I’d be afraid of losing a cap on the road and I was able to install the caps as mentioned above.

 

Thanks. So I take it, you still keep the metal retaining ring installed, you just made sure they were all lined up then clipped them in?

 

Yes, I kept the ring. But I broke tabs on the new Pro center caps by trying to line all the tabs up and pound into place like I used to on other center caps. I recommend seating one side (a few clips) first and then carefully persuading the rest over and into their slots. I hope I’m describing this correctly. The design of these caps/tabs is not awesome. Holler if I confused you.

 

No this makes perfect sense. I was able to pop the loose one back in, but I'm worried that when the car needs tire-rotations or service that over time they will end up breaking. I guess it's a small price to pay for having these wheels!

Like you said the good point is the center caps aren't too expensive, it's just a bummer that the Toyota engineers missed the mark on this one.
