Hello. I am looking for a solution here before taking it to a dealership. I can no longer remote start my truck with the key fob. It happened about a year from the purchase. I can still do it via a Toyota phone app, which is a paid subscription. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. G

P.S. Both fobs are working fine otherwise. Just the remote start does not.

Update 1: New fob battery did not fix the issue. Thank you!

Update 2: Two short clicks on <lock> and one long one worked for a first-year and suddenly stopped.

Hmm... maybe the battery is dying? If you still have the subscription then it could just be a connectivity issue. I know the two are tied into the subscription apparently. That conversation will start a riot here, because many of us are not happy about it. All your other buttons still work? Unlock and lock etc etc? I'd try changing the battery first and if that doesn't solve it, report back and hopefully some more educated members can help you troubleshoot to avoid dealer fees and such.

    Oh look, another mod....
    Have you tried this?

Remote start system not working on Toyota Tacoma
If the engine on your Tacoma does not start when you perform the remote starting procedure, it can be due to a number of reasons:

    • Your vehicle is low on fuel.
    • The hood on your Tacoma is not fully closed.
    • One or more of the vehicle doors are open, make sure they are securely closed.
    • The transmission is not in park mode (P).
    • The 12v battery voltage has gone too low.
    • The service engine light is turned on in the instrument cluster.
    • Your Toyota Tacoma may not have the remote start feature. Get your vehicle checked by an authorized dealer to confirm if it is equipped with a remote start system.
Note: Remote engine start feature is not available on Toyota models with manual transmission.

Thank you! The only one that may apply is low battery. Will change it asap.

In the video, it says for 2020 and up to press lock button 3 times and on the 4th, you hold the lock button down. Maybe that’s why my remote start is not working.

Dealer told me to press 2 times and on the 3rd press you hold it down.

I just got mine last Saturday. It’s worked perfect until this morning. Had to manually start it, then when I left work I’m the remote start worked. Then it didn’t again when I took my daughter to practice. Per Toyota website, my hood was closed. I got a ton of gas left. The car came off the truck on Friday so I don’t think it’s the battery, and all doors were shut. Maybe if the butting in sequence faster? I’ll try again later. Not sure what it could be.

I have a 21 and the "2 times and on the 3rd" process works for me.
Used to work for Toyota, if any of the doors were unlocked before starting the sequence it won't work for several seconds. I've had stuff stacked on a baby seat before and it triggered an infant possibly left in car warning; not sure if it stopped the remote start process from working, but it was inoperable for a short period afterwards. I'll have to check but I think the distance for using remote start is shorter than regular remote operation due to negligible signal interruption from distances in excess of 15 meters or so.

If you have techstream available there's also an option to turn it on and off.

Thanks, whoops! It is the distance. It use to work from my window at front of the house about 25 feet. When I’m outside and 10-15 feet away it works consistently. I don’t know why all the sudden the distance shortened.

It's all about the speed of the clicks. Get it wrong and it won't work. I am still trying to master it. I think if I wait till I see the lights flash then press again this might be the right speed to get it to work.

    This is way over engineered!

I have a 2021 OR with remote start, press 2 time and hold on 3rd. Sometimes I have to get really close to the truck before it works. But sometimes I can start it from inside the house.

Yea…the range fluctuates. The speed at which I press key fob is either 2 seconds or rapid. But when it’s rapid, the key fob misses a beep at times.

Everything works except the starting, lights flash like they should, when I hold down on the 3rd or 4th button press the hazards flash, it just never starts... Does anyone know if there is a module installed somewhere? Or is it software in the radio or ECM? If I can confirm hardware is installed I can ask the dealer, if nothing is installed then I know it won't work and can buy something after market.
