Hey everyone I have a 2020 OR and it has 26k on it pretty new my tie rod bushing went out and I had to get it fixed under warranty after this happened I started listening to the truck more and checking it out and now I’m hearing something with the engine idk if it was always like that and I didn’t pay attention before but there is a sound coming from the top right it sounds like a electrical buzz almost and when I put my truck into drive it goes away my engine also ticks a lot does anyone know if this is normal I always do my oil changes at 5 k and take care of the car I did run 91 couple times to see if that would help doesn’t seem to change anything

I get a lot of ticking too. No rhyme or reason for time or weather. The engine often changes to a variety of sounds. Last week I took my Dad on a 500 mile trip to his old cabin. He asked me if the truck was a diesel! I bought the truck last winter. By Spring I chose to ignore any engine sounds short of banging/grinding etc (which it hasn't done yet).

I believe the ticking sounds are the high pressure fuel system for the direct injection. Direct injection motors make lots of noises.

Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s nothing and it’s been cold lately so maybe makes it sound louder just wondering if anyone had problem with the engine on their 3rd gen

My 2019 F150 5.0 (same dual injection like the 3.5ls V6 in the Tacoma) would tick like that randomly. On those forums people would post the same and the answer was always the high pressure fuel systems because of direct injection. What you don't want is a knock.

There's two different normal ticks. The 3.5 has port and direct injection. DI is similar to how a diesel operates, hence why it kinda sounds like one. The other is there is a mode that cleans the DI injector and its the other tick you hear that comes and goes. The car does it only in certain situations. Long story short its normal and your engine is fine.

It runs a cleaning cycle at idle that also makes it sound noisy like that.

The 3.5 has the D-4S self cleaning system. First time I heard it I thought my engine was going bad lol.

These engines make a lot of interesting sounds. Mine ticks and sounds like a diesel at times, I’m not worried at all. Toyota engines in general tend to be loud.

You are already doing good on maintenance so I wouldn’t worry about it man.

My 2020 does the same thing. There's a distinct higher pitched clicking sound. Has been there for me since day one.

i have my truck idling in a parking garage at work (going into buildings to grab trash to throw it in the bed) and whenever i come back i always notice that ticking noise. not all the time, but makes sense that it is the cleaning cycle.

Holy run on sentence dude. Use some punctuation lol

For what it's worth, the 3.5L is pretty noisy, just like the 4.0L. Don't sweat it too much unless you start hearing/feeling obvious signs of problems, like engine knock.
