Long time lurker about ready to pull the trigger on my first Toyota truck. This is a two year lease. Family of three. I am 6', wife is 5'4", and baby is in a rear facing car seat. We have a mid-size SUV as regular family vehicle. Truck is mostly for my work managing a few rental properties and DIY stuff at home.

I have my eye on a Tacoma with 6' bed. After comparing length and width to the Tundra, I'm wondering if I should go with the Tundra. The Tundra felt massive to me during the test drive, but it is definitely roomier than the Tacoma.

What say you long bed owners? What are the pros and cons of Tacoma DCLB over the full size Tundra?

    Thanks!

I have 2020 sport DCLB and I’m 6’1” (small flex lol) but there’s plenty of room! While I can’t attest to the kid seat part, I’ve had 4 people in the truck and they didn’t mind the space

If you want room in the cab and power, tundra 100%. I own both. A Tacoma isn't the best for kids seats in the back.

I’ve had a couple of full size trucks. If you’re going to work, tow, load heavy, frequently haul 4x8 sheets, or use the back seat for long trips- that’s what they do best. But...

I just bought my Tacoma this week because after having my last big truck (f150 4x4), I found myself using my car allot more than the full size. 99% of the time I was just going to work or running errands or whatever and a big truck is just a pain in the ass in traffic or trying to park in a crowded parking lot. I’ve only had the taco for a few days and I’m already loving it.

What size bed did you get? Do you feel the long bed negates the benefit of having a mid size truck due to the added overall length?

6ft bed. No, it’s narrower so it’s still very maneuverable. Visibility is great.

It’s an extra foot, it’s really not that much for the long bed.

the long bed taco is only a few inches shorter than a full size tundra but its still really easy to maneuver.
I have a taco with 2 kids and it seems fine.
We have a runner for the weekends and its much more comfortable.

Take the back bumper off a Tundra and you have a truck as long as the Tacoma DCLB. The Tundra bed height and truck width were a negative for me. The Tacoma is much newer looking. The Tundra is much more heavy duty as a truck. The payload on double cab long bed Tacoma is very low. Mine is only about 950 lbs. So the passengers and things you add must be less than 950 lbs.

I have a dclb, I love it. 1 foot makes a big difference when I gotta fit all my tools and then my kids stroller. Although I love the truck, I feel envious of the space whenever I ride in my friends full size trucks. Put the car seat behind your wives seat and she’ll be just fine, my wife is 5-4 as well. If anything, bring the car seat for the test drive.

I have hauled about 1500lb of stone in the bed and handled fine. The truck was leveled but not sagging. About 2k lb it starts to handle funny, would not recommend. Lol

Aside from all that, please don’t lease your truck. There is so much research showing what a terrible deal it is for you. Don’t fall for the lies they tell you, it is never a good deal.

Tundra is hopelessly outdated; either wait for the 2022 redo, get a 3rd gen Tacoma, or find a different truck. Love my Tacoma-LB, BTW. Extra foot of bed is huge.

Great feedback. I’m going to go with the long bed Tacoma. Thanks, everyone!

Just got rid of my 2016 Tundra OR 4x4 and bought a 2020 Tacoma OR 4x4 DCLB in Jan. Lost some cab space, but the gas mileage is way better. I love it so far.

Had 2 DCLBs, only time they were nice was when I had the bike(s) and gear loaded up, otherwise the other 9/10 times drove and handled just like a full size, stupid turning radius, 3 point turns, easier to pull through to park and pretty fugly in stock trim (way to long looking), seating is still cramped in the back, if you need space and don't mind the tundra (mpg and a bit outdated, however bullproof and will be the last V8 Tundra) thats the clear winner in my opinion, think it actually has a stupid awesome turning radius, at least when I test drove one.

If you’re using the truck for work, just make sure the Tacoma has the payload you need for everything you’re going to be carrying. The narrower width might help some with parking and city streets. My Tundra felt like driving a charter bus at times. It wasn’t just the length, but width was very noticeable. If I needed the larger bed, I would still get the Tacoma.

I say this after a 6 month failed experiment with a 2019 Tundra Crewmax. Take your time and test drive the truck as much as possible to get a good feel for it. Good luck with the search OP!
