    Hello Taco Lovers!

My Tacoma came with the Cast aluminum running boards that I have actually taken offroading at Rausch creek off-road part in PA. I was wondering how well these will hold up over time to protect my frame versus purchasing rock sliders? I traveled on a majority of the green trails at that part which had some pretty interesting rocky sections on my stock setup with my Taco, and did not seem to damage any part of my stock running boards. Thoughts on long term with these running boards. I do not offroad all of the time. If I did put some rock sliders on what do you think these would be worth for resale?

*Please review photo of what is actually on my truck.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

And I’m sure there’s more I’m missing lol
I actually have these on my truck. Great for the occasional oops moments but certainly not rock sliders by any means. True sliders will support the entire weight of the truck and protect it well. Your running boards and mine are for the weekend warrior who likes to explore but isn’t doing true rock crawling. Another benefit is prevent door dings from other moron drivers who slam their doors open in parking lots.
As far as resale, I’d list for maybe 400 :notsure:

I’m in on the search right now for some rock sliders! The aluminum oem are not very strong and will dent! I’m afraid they will bend and make my door unable to open!

    :). Good luck

Running boards aren't going to protect much. If you really want protection, rock sliders are the way to go. Also, don't think they're just necessary for extreme rock crawling. They protect from all kinds of stuff...stumps, trees, ruts. Worth the upgrade if you're spending any time offroad.

    Agreed.

You're gonna get a false sense of security with those and it is gonna hurt. Really. Bad.

Both in parts and in your wallet to fix it. Those running boards are not mounted to the frame and will do more damage than save.

This is all assuming you OP take your vehicle off more than a maintained fire road.

Look at Marlin Crawler for your sliders. Great stuff there.

    OP,
The sliders are meant to assist in one moving passed obstacles that may have a chance in causing body damage to the space between your front/ rear wheels. Add to that, should one become high centered on a rock, you don't end up with your rocker panel crushed upwards eliminating your door(s) to open.
Those OEM aluminum step bars are damn pricey, wow.
