Hey everyone - New to Tacoma world. I wanted to black out the chrome surround on the grill but didn't want to spend a fortune. I was thinking of removing the grill and plastidipping - but not sure if the surround actually comes out (taping would be a nightmare).

Any suggestions for keeping this cheap and relatively easy? It's a leased vehicle so I'm not trying to spend too much and I'd like to be able to return it to original OEM if needed.

The surround can be removed and painted/plastidipped. You need to remove the entire grille to do it, but it's not too hard.

Welcome to the forum. I once thought that I wanted to black out my trim, but have since changed my mind. I did this instead.

Yes, it is totally EASY to remove the OEM grill. Look for videos on Youtube about swapping the toyota grill for 3rd generation, and you will come up with many that show exactly how to do it. It is basically removing two popup fasteners, and then a couple of 10mm bolts. Then it just pops out, although it you have 2018 or later you will also have to unplug the TSS sensor. When you remove the grill, you will have to remove a bunch of screws all around the thing on the inside, and then CAREFULLY pop out the snaps that hold it in. Be careful NOT to break any of the tabs! But then, the grill will come out of the body housing, and the chrome ring trim will be separate. You can then paint/plastidip or whatever to your liking.

    1. Remove grill
    2. Derp the bezel
    3. Reinstall grill
    4. Go out and drop some panties:D

Mrtacoman88; out of curiosity, tell me/us a little about what you did to your grill. I am assuming you took the OEM grill off, plastidipped it and then reinstalled it. It looks like the whole thing was blacked out. is that right? I actually like it! Thanks!

I removed the factory grill, seperated the bezel and painted it. The grill itself i did not touch. Some days i love it, some days im ok with it, depending on the lighting.

Everybody around here has trd pro grill, but i think its the best looking.

    Good luck!

Hey Mrtacoman88; thanks for the response. From the picture, it looked like you painted the grill too, which is what intrigued me. I hated the OEM 'chicken wire' grill and already had the TRD Pro grill ordered and waiting in my house for when my truck arrived at the dealer. But in dealing with the TSS issues, I have had slight thoughts of switching the grill back out, although I admit that I really do like the TRD Pro grill. And with my latest 'fix' on the TSS system, so far, I have not had any problems, so I 'may' have finally fixed that, thereby making null my thoughts of going back to the OEM grill. But, I did like the pic that seemed to show the entire OEM grill in black. Thanks for sharing!
