Got a notice in the mail for the recall. Has anyone had this done and what did the dealer do? Wondering if I really need to get it done because I don't trust others working on my vehicles unless absolutely needed.

Swap the pump only in the tank. This requires replacing the seals involved.

If you don't get the recall done, it can hold up a sale if you're planning.

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
I had a 2019 RAV4 and took it to Toyota for an oil change and they insisted on keeping it for another 3 hours to drop the tank and replace the fuel pump.

Then (after 4 hours) they said my fuel pump was not being recalled ... that was maybe 6 months ago.

I now have a 2021 RAV4 with no fuel pump recall.

IIRC ... Toyota did have some issues with engine hesitation and fuel starvation while driving.

Mine was done by my Toyota dealership back in January. It was a Saturday and I was in for a routine oil change and tire rotation. The service writer told me they didn't have many appointments and that his head mechanic was working so would I like to have the fuel pump changed out. I told him I wish I would have known sooner as I had just stopped for gas before I arrived for my appointment. He told me no problem if the fuel tank is full so I told him to go ahead and do it...I was out of there in about 2-21/2 hours.

I had it done. No issues.

I understand the reasoning for not having other people work on your vehicles though. I recently had routine oil change/tire rotation etc done and the dealership bent the backing plate on my rear wheels, so I get a nice screeching noise upon deceleration.

Then when I took it back they said my rear brakes should be shaved because they were uneven. SMFH. I’ll take the $400 they were going to charge me and buy more $GME

Good point. The recall instructions require a master tech for the work.

Had mine done a couple months ago. First time, booked the appointment they got the truck and brought it back....turned out the pump they ordered was for a Highlander instead of a Tacoma. They came back a week later, got the truck and did the recall no issues. Also did the radar sensor recall. No issues before or after pump replacement.

I'm still waiting for mine to be done as well.
I made a deal to trade it on a Tundra in late Feb, the dealer came back and said "did you know there is a recall on your truck?"
I said yes but you don't have parts to fix it yet.
I bet once they get it back they will find the parts, I think as a Missouri Dealer they cannot can sell it with an open recall.
New truck should be in before the end of the month (hopefully it won't be part of this recall, I have heard 2020 Tundra owners getting the notice)

All in all you should let the dealer do the recall and then check their work.

Got my Tacoma done still waiting to get Rav4 done when they have enough pumps in stock to start working on those. Just told to bring it in with as little gas in it that I can. No problems with it after a couple of months.

I do have a locking gas cap so I made sure to put the key with the fob to make things obvious

My dealer said the recall is being spread out so they don't get slammed. He was kind enough to look up my VIN and said it should be about the end of March.

I never had any driveability issues but received the recall notification. The fuel pump was replaced. It took about 3 hours. My truck still dtives the same. No issues. My girlfriend's Highlander has the same recall.

I’m at the dealership in Marina Del Rey right now getting my last Toyota Care service done. SA explained the recall to me but their dealership won’t be ready to perform it for another month. Offered me a loaner in the meantime if I don’t feel safe driving the Taco around.

I had my fuel pump recall replacement done about a week ago. I dropped the truck off in the morning and they called to say it was complete about 3 hours later. It hasn't been driven much since then but all seems OK and I don't notice any difference in the way it drives.

One thing to add, since I saw some old posts saying you needed to have less than a quarter tank of gas when you bring it in for the recall, apparently Toyota has fixed that problem and service departments now have a custom hydraulic jack to lower the tank (I had about 3/4 tank of gas when my recall fix was done).

Just a friendly correction. I'm a toyota tech and the reason why they tell you to bring your vehicle in with a 1/4 to 1/2 a tanks is because the fuel lines are under pressure and some vehicles fuel pumps are accessed through the cabin. It's to avoid spraying fuel all over your brand new interior and also the tech!

OK, so they give everybody a generic precaution. But, on the Tacoma the tank is partialy removed, just enough to remove the pump assy. And with a 1/4 tank makes it alot easier to manipulate especially when you are tilting the tank forward leaving the rear of the tank, hoses, filler neck almost in place. If you have a full tank makes a mess sometimes

My fuel pump started acting up last spring with 60k on the odometer.

The fuel pump was backordered so they gave me a rental truck through Enterprise. It took them 7 weeks to get the new fuel pump in. Now I have 80k on the truck with no further issues.

Yeah pretty much, I've never done it that way though. I drop the tank every time and leave it on the lift while I replace the pump in the sender. I find it easier than trying to work all cramped and still make plenty of time on them.
