Hello fellow Taco-owners. I recently read this article about the 2018 being the worst model year. What are the opinions on this?

    https://www.motorbiscuit.com/is-the-2018-toyota-tacoma-the-worst-model-year/

Piggyback question, what are the opinions in regards to the above article and responding with purchasing a (frowned upon) extended warranty? So, they say 2018 is unreliable and has possible brake or transmission issues. Would it be a clever idea to get an extended warranty to combat these potential issues?

    Appreciate it!

The “issues” are just complaints regarding the shifting software. There’s nothing that is unreliable in terms of durability and longevity.

I have been noticing that complaint as well. Which I don't know if I would classify that as an "issue" as much as a characteristic of the transmission software. I am not seeing anything in regards to the transmission being bad, either.

    Thanks for the reply.

The only thing I've heard being remotely unreliable is the 3rd brake light. Everything else that's common seems more to be just complaints about the way it does X thing (shifting, etc). I have yet to hear about consistent failures of anything, including things that have been recalled.

Edit: I forgot about the issues with the Super White paint, but that's not unique to the Tacoma.

It's also personal preference too. Some are far more nitpicky than others. Some would say the transmission shifts fine while another would want to trade it in right away. My advice is if you like yours, don't feed into other people's BS. Always see for yourself.

Wow... Guess I'll sell my '18 Tacoma since the article knows all. :jerkoff:

I have zero issues with my taco, but my experience cannot speak for others.

FWIW, I’m an ‘18 owner with ~40k miles and zero issues. I did purchase OVTune from the beginning as the transmission wasn’t to my liking.

    But zero reliability issues otherwise.

HAHHA. I read another article that commented on unreliability and suggested the Honda Ridgeline instead of a Tacoma?! To each their own...

People hate on the 2018 because it has the same issues as the 16-17, but added toyota safety sense to the mix. Ive yet to have issue with the safety sense though.

But really I think 2018 is the best year because it has all the things that 16-17 has, and all the things 19 has tech wise (bed storage bin missing after 2018)

It flakes off! Not a new issue, my wife’s 2010 Prius had flaky white paint.

Ahh! Good to know. Thanks for the heads up.

Looking into getting either a 4-Runner limited or Tacoma double cab TRD to replace my aging Odyssey. Liked the white so that's why I asked.

No real issues with my 2018. I would sometimes notice weirdness in the shifting back when I bought it. Either I've gotten used to the quirks, or the AT really does just take a bit to learn your driving patterns (or maybe it's both), but I really enjoy driving this truck.

I'd say that 2018 is one of the best model years to buy. Most of the new generation jitters have been worked out (transmission shift points, no leaky third break light, etc.) And on top, it's the first year of this generations refresh with TSS. There are a lot of folks on here that like to pooh-pooh it, but the reality is that these systems work and to most are a welcome addition. 2018 was the first year I believe to add passenger side floor anchors, and is the last year with the cubby and go pro mount. In 2019 you lost both of these options, and the only difference between that and the 20 is apple CarPlay/android auto.

So I'd say in order of my personal preference if I could go back in time and buy new would be:
    1. 2020 (lose some goodies but gain carplay)
    [Skip 2019]
    2. 2018 (for the TSS and all the first rendition goodies)
    [Skip 2017]
    3. 2016 (for the newest generation)

That's similar to my opinion on the 2018 model. It seems that with the 2016 came the kinks that comes with all new things. I would assume that the 2021 should be even more refined.
