My 2018 Tacoma Sport 4x4 engine seems to be noisy. Sort of like a ticking that reminds me of noisy lifters in older cars or maybe even a quiet diesel engine. It appears to be worse after engine reaches full operating temperature. I have not had it to dealer yet but was wondering if anyone else has noticed this problem. Also the transmission down shifting seems excessive, sometimes two or more gears just get on the freeway. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

The ticking is the direct injection system. Older fuel injectors were port style and injected into the manifold at lower pressures. The noise you hear is the high pressure fuel system spraying fuel directly into the cylinders and is a common sound amongst almost all new gasoline cars.

The 2nd Gen tacos made the same ticking as does every other car these days. Every enthusiast forum is full of discussion about the same noise. For some reason, people are just discovering this phenomenon that’s been around for a decade.

Endless discussions since the time of the 2nd gens:

You 2.7 was not direct injection, hence no ticking.

I think he is saying both his 2015 and 2019 are 2.7, the 2019 2.7 does not have DI does it?

To be clear, I’m not trying to be jerky.

Fuel injector “tick” is a complaint that is filling the internet. As almost all cars go to GDI (gasoline direct injection), this ticking thing needs to be understood by more people. You can Google for days, and read about Corvettes and Civics, etc all ticking.

The reason Toyota and other makers put those cheesy plastic covers on their engines with the batting underneath is to reduce the ticking sound. You will also find this on the 4.0l Tacoma engines and in the Runners.

On the V6 Tacos, if you look at the cylinder heads, there is foam right on the engine as well, all in an effort to reduce the sound of the injector “tick”.

If the ticking was from misadjusted valves, this forum would be full of engine failure complaints, which it is not.

No it doesn’t. If it’s ticking, it’s likely gonna blow.

It looks like the major changes to the 2.7L happened in the last year of the 2nd gens (2015) when they gave it the dual VVTI. It is still a Port-injected engine (not GDI) as far as I understand.
