Hi folks! I have been experiencing a brake shudder/stutter since I bought my truck (currently 7000km on it). When it went in for it's first service, I mentioned this to the dealer and after going for a drive, they said my rotors were warped - which they replaced without issue. It seemed to fix the problem for awhile but I am still experiencing the shudder.

When coming to a stop, it feels like my back brakes are shuddering/stuttering at the last minute. This causes the truck to shudder in the back when braking. It makes an audible clicking sound and you can feel the brakes shuddering/stuttering. It seems to happen when going slow and short distances between stopping and starting.

I am also experiencing an issue where the truck lurches forward at the last second when braking. These two issues do not happen at the same time although they can. It also doesn't happen all the time.

After doing some reading on tacomaworld I basically have come up with the following list that it could be :

    Driveline
    Bent/warped axle
    Leaf spring issue
Truck shifting into a lower gear at the last second when braking
TSB for the wrong drive shaft angle

I am wondering if there is anyone that currently has this problem/was able to get it solved. I love the truck but it is annoying when these issues happen and feels borderline unsafe at times. I did get the TSB that fixed the weird shifting at my last appointment.

Any advice or help would be great!!

    Yep, join the club...
My truck's been in four times for the same issue, but it' not so bad I'd consider it unsafe, just annoying.
First they turned rotors, then replaced rotors, then replaced drums, then re-adjusted drums.
When I pull up on the hand-brake while coasting I feel the same exact shudder. (I explained this in the beginning, but they must feel they have to follow a certain troubleshooting scheme). They tell me my 18 DCSB 6MT SPORT doesn't have any TSB to apply for this issue.
I plan to continue discussing with dealer during every trip.
I know others have had luck with axle replacements and loosening the drums although it seems like that is a temporary fix.

I will try that while coasting tomorrow and see if I can replicate it. I do think I read something about the handbrake being an issue related to this but I forget how (I use my handbrake/parking brake all the time while it sits in the driveway).

In regard to it feeling unsafe, it just sketches me out and I don't trust it all the time. Every single other vehicle I have driven has never done that (including 2018 Colorado and a 2015 Sierra). It just seems like an issue that shouldn't be on such an expensive vehicle.

You're exactly right, my feeling too- I hate having other people ride in my $30K+ truck and ask what that shudder is...
The dealer did tell me that it could be from using my handbrake while parked; basically that shoe material is sticking to the drum. I pulled the drums to inspect and didn't see anything on the drum; looked really clean but I sanded anyways. I also was convinced I had the axle issues, so I dial indicated the flange and drum centering hub. All good within .002". The diameter of the hub measured within the TSB also. I'm stumped, so I will live with it for now.

Same thing happening with my 2018 DCSB Off Road with 900 miles. Dealer replaced the front brakes the last trip and are doing the back tomorrow when they get the parts. I'm sure it won't fix it and I'll be in the same place you guys are. Lemon law anyone?

Good luck. Give it a bit for the shoes to wear into the drums and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks. My fingers are crossed. I'm just glad they're taking me seriously to be honest because its actually been hard to replicate since it doesn't happen 100% of the time. Goodluck to you guys too.

Good luck to you guys. Mine were fixed a couple months ago. It's still smooth as butter. I'm hoping it doesn't come back.

Just curious, what'd they do to fix yours?

Keep us updated. You're totally right about it being hard to replicate. We have a stretch of road where I'm from that has a lot of four way stops and it usually starts acting up right about there.

I'll be sure to add this to my list when I call them and bring it again.

What did they end up doing? Drums, Axles, Driveline, Etc?

They replaced my rear drums. My problem first surfaced 50 miles on the odo. I'm 600-800 miles since the fix and still no issues.

Same issue here. My service manager was very helpful and took me on a test drive in my truck. Here is how to replicate issue. Drive at or near highway speeds 50-65 and apply the brakes, starting gently and gradually press harder. The issue should present itself.

I thought I had warped the front rotors, however they are suspecting it has to do with the rear drums. It is possible that there were a small number of 2018s that have a rear drum, axel alignment issue. If yours was part of that batch the problem should show up within a few hundred miles of being driven off the lot new. I have seen it since around 500mi, I now have 3k on the truck. They recently had another one in for the same issue.

I’ll keep you posted on the repair and what they are replacing, and if that was the cause.

Had the rear drums replaced a few days ago and have driven a couple hundred miles since. The shudder seems to be gone. I'm hoping it stays that way. Goodluck guys.

All fixed, turned out to be more simple than expected. The dealer replaced the rear drums and shoes. Supposedly the rear brakes were set too tight / over tightened from the factory.

My 19 TRD Sport is currently in the dealers service shop for this problem, exactly what you guys were experiencing -non replicable stuttering from rear end I noticed on day 3. Put 800 miles on it the first 6 days and it's been in their shop the last 6 days. They're saying it's the rear axles out of spec and I keep getting excuses for why its not fixed. After I called customer support and complained he got me the real story: the first set of axles they installed made the problem worse during test drive. So now I have to wait for another set of axles to come in so they can try again. Meanwhile im stuck driving a Camry instead of my new 4x4!

The same issue, they replaced the rear drums and brake pads. Stated that the brake tolerances were too tight from the factory. No issues since.
