2017 Used TRD PRO Cement vs. 2021 New TRD PRO Lunar Rock

    Hi All,

New member and soon to be first time Tacoma owner (hopefully). Coming from a 2013 F150 FX4 and now own 2 SUVs (Telluride and Explorer). Was dead set on a Tundra, but after really looking at it I decided a Tacoma would fit my needs better.

My question for the group is I have an opportunity to purchase one of 2 vehicles:

    1. 2017 Tacoma TRD PRO Cement: 25,000 miles $39K. Comes with 5" oval black running boards and roof rack. Haven't seen it in person yet, but have been in discussions with the dealership.
    2. 2021 Tacoma TRD PRO Lunar Rock: Brand New $48K. Comes with spray in bedliner and Predator steps.

I like both colors equally as well. Is the $9K extra worth getting the brand new version? The price on the 2017 especially with the Cement color seemed pretty good.

Thanks in advance - look forward to contributing and becoming part of your community!

I'm not 100% sure, I don't own a Pro, but I've read the Fox suspension needs rebuilding sooner than later, so you may look in to that.
Me? I'd buy a brand new unPro for $39k,,, I just don't see the shift handle and Fox suspension worth $10k. Especially if you're just going to mod later.

You can save some money by getting a used TRD OR (or a new one for that matter) and add wheels, suspension and exhaust to match or exceed the TRD Pro and still have change in your pocket.

I had a similar conundrum but with an OR, decided going new with a discount off msrp was better for me.

Costs more, but I get it 100% the way I want it, and the depreciation is minimal as vehicles go.

Appreciate the feedback guys - didn't think about going that route, but that might be the better way to go. I wanted leather and because I have a little one who can create quite the mess to clean up sometimes. When I built one with a package that added leather in the price was $45K as the package was a $5100 add to to the TRD Off Road package.

Honestly if your in a position to spend the extra $9k on the truck and it’s meets all your needs than I would jump on it. Your getting a lot more options and warranty on the 21 model. If you plan on doing a build than there’s other options as well but with the 2 trucks listed it seems like you already have your mind set on which model.

Either way you’ll be a happy new owner!!!

Spray in bed liner? They aren't the same as previous years?

The question is what you're going to do with/to the truck. As already noted, many people who like to mod their vehicles will recommend you go for the 2017 - or get a new OR - and spend the money on the suspension upgrades.

As you noted, though, when you start equipping an OR with the various packages that bring it up to what is in a Pro, it get's pretty close in cost without the upgraded suspension of the Pro.

For me, I wanted the leather, the sunroof and the tech upgrades. I don't offroad but I do live on a dirt road in the northeast that can be snow covered one day and a mud pit the next. I also crew for a hot air balloon company that takes us into some difficult areas to do recoveries. Since I'm not one to do significant suspension mods, the Pro was a solid choice for me.

There are also some upgrades between the 2017 and 202/21 models that I like - power adjustable driver's seat and CarPlay among them. I also consider in the warranty factor between the 2017 and the 21 - none versus full.

What works for YOU is what works for YOU.

Yeah money isn't an issue for the buy. I was originally planning on buying a Lunar Rock TRD Pro Tundra so this will save me some more for mods. Another factor for the TRD Pros was the color as it's not available in the other version.

That was one of the things that pushed me towards my Pro, too. I loved the Army Green - and also am in a position where the cost factor wasn't an issue. But, remember that next year Toyota will offer Lunar Rock across the model lines.

They just quoted me a spray in bed liner on the new one - it was a $554 add. Not sure if there's one on the used one I'm looking at.

DO NOT FALL INTO THIS TRAP!

Next year it will be available on all trims if Toyota continues as it historically has. You will have a unique truck for about 9 months, then it will be everywhere.

    Just a friendly headsup.

I wouldn't pay that under any circumstance. That's a rip off. All 3rd gen Tacos have a plastic bed, no real need to do this other than it probably looks newer longer.

Absolutely - but you still end up with a a 2021 in a color that was put on only something like 25% of the Pros. Again, if you love the color and the Pro fits your needs/desires....go for it!

I love my AG Pro - totally happy with the choice I made and happy to share the color with the 2021 guys..

Devious6 captured my feelings precisely. We wanted all the bells & whistles found as standard equipment on the Pro (optional on the OR for lots of $$$), and we loved Lunar Rock. For the off-roading we do, lifts and gargantuan tires are not required. For us, the Pro fits our needs and we have the 3-year warranty too.

Absolutely, but lots of guys buy a Pro specific color then are pissed it's on the SR next to them at the mall next year because they were unaware Toyota tends not to do special colors. OP should know what he is looking at. And since all 3rd gens look alike, having a special color 21 won't matter when the 22's come out.

OP will really be upset when the 22 CeMint SR with fake pro badges rolls up at the stop light lol looking just like his "real" truck.

To echo what others have stated but slightly differently, if you plan to mod, get a new OR and upgrade from there. If you are happy with the Pro as it sits and have no intentions of changing the suspension, etc, I would personally get a the 2021 Pro. I've been on here too long to know that sometimes 1st time 4x4 buyers jump into a truck, don't know what the hell they are doing and fuck it up 6 different ways. Since you've stated money isn't a huge factor, get the truck you love, you'll get 36 months of warranty and a lower interest rate New vs Used if you are even financing it.

Yeah - the truck will be used for minimal off-roading other than trips to the mountains in PA. I'll use it more for hunting/fishing trips, camping, and as a daily driver. That was one of the things that brought me to the PRO. Had the things I was looking for with leather, tires, color scheme, etc. My mind is made up I'm getting a PRO and at this point a 2021 PRO. Great community of guys here - multiple responses in less than a half hour!

I think it depends on whether or not the differences between the 2017 and 2021 Pro are worth the cost. The 2021 has power driver's seat, CarPlay, Safety Sense, LED headlights, full warranty, 2 years of maintenance, and no miles. If you plan to finance, interest rates are usually better on new vehicles versus used. Personally, I would go with the 2021. Used Tacoma prices are always high and I like the peace of mind of the new vehicle and warranty.

The other option, as some have mentioned, is going with a 2021 TRD OR. I know the MSRP may end up being $45k, which is close to the Pro, but dealers will discount the TRD OR. So you may be able to get a new truck and have the price somewhere in between the used and new Pros you're looking. Whatever you decide, make sure to get a few good test drives in before pulling the trigger.
