Hi, i just bought a 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport. Super excited!!! I have been advised that tacomas give around 20 MPG combined but my Average tank fuel economy is displaying around 12 MPG average.

Make sure its not accidentally stuck in 4 wheel drive and then just drive a couple tank fulls and see if it improves, also non ethanol fuel will help if you can find it.

on my dash main screen i have set my driving real time average and my trip average fuel economy. seeing that in front of me all the time really makes me be a light foot and conscious of my driving habits. after 3000 miles my overall is 18.3 and lately my tanks have been 19ish. i have a few trips over into the low 20s, but they are few and far between no matter how light i drive. that's even with some light hypermiling (neutral downhilling)
    2017 OR longbed auto.

It will go up, plus the transmission needs about 1500-2000 miles to learn how you drive and optimize fuel economy. Give it time.

    A few minor things...
I have a 2016 TRD Sport. ATF was filled correctly after I purchased, and I have the transmission TSB done.

I have 19.5k miles on my truck now, the first 1k I got around 17 mpg due to break in. Constantly changing the throttle, bedding the brakes when it was new etc.

I now average 22mpg. I drive 35 miles round trip to work, 6 miles (3 each way) on a 45 mph road and the rest on 65 mph highway. I go 40-45 on the road to the highway so I can let my truck warm up, then I sit at around 70 on the highway.

If it is your 1st tank there is no telling how long the dealer left it idling while they were prepping it or when they went over the features with you. my 1st tank was terrible. however, it still doesn't come near what is advertised. I'm getting high 16's with mostly in town driving. only have one long trip but was fighting headwinds and climbing much of the time and the best I've seen is 19.9.

19 to 20 is about average for a Stock configured truck....it should balance out once you get some mileage on it. Some folks are getting worse however, 17 to 18 on average. Others (few and far between) are averaging 21 or 22mpg in some cases. Fuelly.com gives the real picture on this. Obviously if you lift and put larger tires these numbers will get worse.

I've always been able to do more than the advertised mpg on the sticker. My wife, not so much. In the summer I get 23+. Have got as high as 25. Some things to consider is that I have the plastic tonneau cover and the tires are the Firestone low rolling resistance types. All this helps with the mpg. And we all drive differently so even if you had a cover and the low rolling resistance tires, you wouldn't get the same as me.

Yeah, I'm pretty heavy footed and much of my driving is on uneven terrain. :D

How do you get the TSB done? My transmission feels a little sluggish. Is that normal?

Unfortunately yes it's normal and one of the most frequent complaints we see on the third gen

Ideally you go to your dealer complaining of one of the symptoms the TSB is listed as addressing and they apply it to your truck.
Whether you have to deal with a bunch of bullshit or not seems to depend on the dealer.

Lots of discussion on the matter, as well as PDF copies of the TSB, are easily found in the sticky thread on that topic near the top of this forum.

Feels a little sluggish - means different things to different folks, but it does seem the transmission upshifts pretty agressively and doesn't like to get to the power band if you're soft-footed. Also remember it has six speeds and definitely aims to put you in the most economical gear. Remember the motor likes to rev, so press the go pedal with vigor when you want it to go.

My truck is in for its 5k service and they're applying the TSB. It's been okay so I've had no need to take in until it was time, mostly I'm having the TSB done because it's there. Hate to be behind the times. :)

just reached my first 1K miles and i'm averaging 16.5-16.9. when i first got it, i was getting low 17s, a little drop, but i'm hoping it will get better.

on another note, do all the 17s come with the new rev.1 TSB? mines was built in 11/16 and was going to mention it at the 5K service, but if its already applied, then no need.

Just picked up truck from the dealer. They said they cannot apply the tsb as mine has the latest already. They said to check on my 5k service if toyota comes up with a new update on the tsb.
A top brand name v6 truck with mediocre accelaration power is hella bothering me. The transmission seems to love the higher gears. I understand the economical thing but c'mon. This is no good!!
