After having my 2016 written off I am anxiously awaiting delivery of my 2017 Tacoma PRO. Should be here end of April or beginning of May. I went thru the transmission issues with my 2016 and after the software update it was fine. I am curious if anyone is having issues with the 2017's? Or has this issue gone away? Thanks.

Mine (SR5 AT) seems ok but I don't have anything to compare it to. What issues were you having?

My 2017 was low a quart during my 6 month check up but drove fine, none of the issues people were having.

I have a 17 limited and had to get the transmission TSB. Still shifts weird between 2nd and 3rd when I first crank it up in the morning. It "slips" that one time and is good for the day. Very odd.

Mine sticks in gear. Refuses to shift on its own. I have to physically move it from gear to gear. Such a piece of shit. Toyota is no help. They tell me that's the way it's supposed to be.

17 model here. 4500 miles. No issues. Just towed a 17 ft dual axle trailer with a big loader scoop of wet dirt from the land scape supply place yesterday. Pulled it like a champ... even up a couple of big grades. Didn't stop as well though. (Need trailer brake controller). Sorry about your troubles. Lemon maybe?

1/2 quart to a quart is not going to cause transmission issues. When the Tornado Siren went off in December of 2015 about trucks being possibly low on fluid and that was the cause of erratic shifting, everyone went to the dealers demanding the fluid to be checked. Most found they were 1/4, 1/2 to a quart low (yes their was isolated incidents of 2 to three quarts which is a problem) But here is the problem, the manual check procedure can easily be done wrong, in the service manual it specifically addresses on what and how much should come out of the overflow. I would be with quite a bit of certainty that most techs missed the fine print.

What was funny back then, is some guys that knew transmissions said that 1/4 to 1 quart low wouldn't cause transmission issues and the issues were the shifting logic. Those guys were dismissed as idiots. And low and behold Toyota comes out with TSB's for shifting logic.

Here is the deal, the transmissions are fine, the engine is fine. The issue is Toyota gave the engine a Vasectomy, high geared the truck, and flattened the torque curve in the name of emissions and fuel economy, and until someone cracks the ECU and fixes this were stuck.

And it is going to get worse much worse. Manufactures are under extreme pressure to increase mileage and continue to add safety features. And the safety industry doesn't want us to drive our trucks/cars, they want us to tell the trucks what to do and then they decide how much throttle to give etc. The tech already exists now to control the vehicles speed to not exceed the speed limit, due to GPS and mapping advances. But if they did that local police departments would loose revenue collected from the tickets they write.

I get the "slip" from 3rd to 4th not 2nd to 3rd. I did think it was 2nd to 3rd at first and realized I never noticed when it shifted into 2nd since that shift comes so fast. Have you had the Trans Revision 1 TSB done? The original Trans TSB wasnt supposed to address this but the Rev 1 TSB is supposed to correct this. I have read of it working for some people on here but I havent been able to have it done because they want me to leave my truck with them for a 3rd time and I'm tired of having to find rides to get around so they can try and replicate the problem that they keep saying they cant replicate. I'm going to try a 3rd dealer soon when I go in for my 15k service.

I had posted last year that my truck was shifting like a "drunken epileptic monkey". I went to Toyota and they rebooted the software and it was fine. I was just wondering if the 2017's were getting that done at the factory now. Must be if nobody is noticing anything unusual. Thanks.

'17s are not getting the software reboot. I have a DCSB 17' sport and I went back in the other day to get the software.

Have not noticed any problems with my '17 after 3 weeks and 500 miles. But very little freeway driving in my experience so far.

Have had a couple pronounced clunks when coming to a gentle stop, but not sure of the cause yet.

Common problem that affects 2016s too. Nobody I've seen can put their finger on the cause.

Has been posted about many times here in the forum. If you search "clunk in rear" or "harsh downshift" and "axle wrap" you will find the discussion in many areas here. Just click on the box under the search function that says "search this forum only" and you'll narrow it down to all of the turd gen complaints about this issue. If interested in finding more info try searching a variety of search terms each time, just like I typed above.

Haven't checked the fluid level on mine yet (10k miles) and the only issue I have is that it will occasionally hold a lower gear instead of shifting up to 5th or 6th. Other than that it's been fine. I'm taking it in for service next week and I plan to have them check the trans to make sure the level is correct.

Spot on. it's all about the ECU programming. Toyota selected this engine/AT combo in an attempt to hit ever increasing demands for better fuel economy and emissions standards which they were unable to meet with the Gen 2 4.0L - too bad as I really liked my Gen 2. Toyota claims that the 3.5L produces more HP than the 4.0L which it probably does from 3150 RPM to redline. But at a cost of less torque in the lower RPM range where you need it. Traditionally, truck engines run in the 1200 - 3500 RPM range during day-to-day driving but don't spend much time in the higher RPM ranges. This is why the 4.0L engine would go well over 200K miles if maintained properly. I don't expect to see that longevity out of the 3.5L because it has to run at much higher RPMs due to the ECU shift points - this is purely my opinion and we may find that these engines will last just as long, I hope that is the case. But I agree that an ECU reprogram is the only possible solution to the gear hunting that drives me crazy.

My 2017 does not have any delay when shifting from R to D or Park to D etc. The only complaint I have is the constant downshifting on the freeway so Toyota has addressed most of the concerns reported in this forum from what I can tell.
