Finally pulled the trigger last Friday on a 2017 SR5 in quicksand. Was wanting 4x4 but this one was sold to me as having “full time 4WD.” My question is, was that even an option for a 2017 SR5 at the factory? How would I be able to tell either way. Forgive the noob questions here guys

There are no full time 4wd Tacomas... They are either 2wd or part time 4wd.

not full time 4wd, You will be in 2wd when normal driving and 4wd when you manually rotate the dial on high / low.

    Welcome to TW.

Your 2017 SR5 is rear wheel drive. If it has the 4x4 option, you can manually put the truck in four wheel drive if you are on loose pack or snow/ slippery surface.

Don’t put the truck in four wheel drive if on dry pavement, generally speaking.

The owners manual states that you should engage the four wheel drive at least once a month for 10 miles, which could be done on dry pavement as long as it is a straight run.

Isn’t full time 4WD just AWD with extra words?

No full time 4wd, as others have stated. Unless they got the selector stuck and can’t disengage 4wd, then you have a clever salesman

Take a pic of the knob area (climate controls and ignition key) and we can tell right away what you have

Thanks guys, I raised the same suspicion at the test drive when I didn’t see the dial, but the truck had all of the other specs and the right price point for me. I probably should have gone home and done more homework before pulling the trigger but these trucks are going crazy fast locally.

Fortunately I bought it at CarMax so I am well within the return window. Annoying but that’s what I’ll be doing

Show us a pic of your a/c controls, and just to left. Something like these.

    Edit: And welcome to TW

I believe you can do a VIN search on Toyota's site, to confirm your model & features.

if you dont have a dial, youre 2wd and not 4x4. Were you specifically looking for full time 4x4?

Thanks, yeah it doesn't have the dial which raised my concern when I went to test drive it. I had never heard of a full time 4WD either but still went through with the deal. Rookie mistake, but I knew with the return policy if something weird came up I would be ok. Time to put that to the test...ugh. Searching the VIN on Toyota site confirms it is 2WD. I would have never gone for this truck if CarMax hadn't of listed it as 4WD

    Back to the drawing board!

No, I wanted part time 4x4 and like I said, I had never even heard of a full time 4x4 on a Tacoma until this truck allegedly had it. Should have trusted my gut!

Hope you find a 4x4 Tacoma that is right for you so you can join us on here!

Would love to hear how the return process goes if you'd be so kind as to update us on that.

    Best of luck!

Back in the day manufactures built trucks with full time 4wd. I can't ever recall a toyota 4x4 pickup ever having full-time 4wd and i've owned them since the 70's.

Full time 4wd mostly have a lockable central diff. When locked the diff acts pretty much like a traditional transfercase. I think Jeep GC, land crusier, G-waggon all have this type of drivetrain. When the diff is unlocked, they operate similar to a awd vehicle..

Other big difference is full-time 4WD typically has a low range, where AWD will not.
