i had a spare key made for my SR5 at an Ace hardware to give to a shuttle driver for a raft trip I was on. They checked my master at the store to see if it had a chip, and they said it didn't. They made the key and i checked to make sure it opened the door and I quickly checked to see if it started. But I didn't leave it running long enough to find out that the truck will only run for a few seconds and then it dies. After that, it won't start at all. I have the basic 4x4 SR5 with the electronic door locks on the key. Anybody know what's going on?

P.S. I luckily rented a raft so the shuttle driver was at the take-out to pick up the raft and gave me a ride back to my truck.

I had a blank key cut at the dealership. All I use it for is to lock my truck door so I can leave my truck idle while I make my rounds in town. The keys with the buttons that came with the truck have a chip in them.

Was that spare key a basic key? I ask since I do a lot of open water swims and generally need to stash the key somewhere outside since I can't take it with me. When I had the Jeep, I would put it in on a yellow keychain buoy and in the pocket, no problem.

But these Taco keys with buttons, well, can't go swimming.

Yea... a basic key. So you can lock the working key in the truck and not worry about the basic key getting wet. All it needs to do is unlock the truck.

I take my key fob swimming with me all the time, in fact every time i wash my truck my key fob goes straight in the bucket to be cleaned.

Swimming in salt water or fresh? (I assume you are washing the truck with fresh :))

I just had a spare key made at Lowes for my SR.

Same thing. The key cut by Lowes will open the doors. The engine turns over and shuts down after about 3 seconds.

I just called the parts guy at a dealer. They told me they had to order the blank for a non-chip tailgate key. It would cost $45!!! I didn't see a 16/17 key listed at Lowes. You guys got a key made for a 16/17 ?

I lost my sr key, I had a new one made at locksmith who programmed with key in ignition. I first called dealer they wanted 400 I laughed and called local locksmith. He ordered new key cut and programmed for 160
