This is why I never buy the first model year of anything new. The 2016 Tacomas had way more problems in general. It really took them till 2018 to make real improvements.

i have been doing CAD since the 80's when i first learned at NNS. i know quite a few 3d software packages including, AutoCad mechanical, Inventor, solid edge and solid works, all are very similar and as long as you think in 3D the curve may be only a few weeks for basics and there are plenty of tutorials online...

Thanks OP. I broke my bushing during a snowstorm. I think ice built up underneath and when I opened the tailgate it must have broken.

Ordered a new one from Shapeways and I installed it yesterday. Hoping it will last another 5 years (at least) like the original one.

Well i had the same problem today, broken plastic insert.
I took a 1/2 inch copper pipe used for plumbing.
cut 2 1/4 inch peice off, wire brushed it nice and shiny
then put it in a vice and flattened it but not completely. i left
a small air gap in the pipe like 1/32 to 1/16 inch in it so when completed
it will be a press fit into the tailgate dampener.
the copper piece should now look like a stick of gum.
next i put a round socket extension tool in the middle of the flattened copper
and bent the material around the tool until it looks like the letter U.
slide the part onto the tailgate dampener. when you slide your tailgate on
it should be a press fit. taking my time it took about 15 minutes.
it works good like it used to.
i also put a hose clamp over it to to deter theives

IMG_0713.jpg The safeway part lasting only a couple of months for me. It seemed to fail with our very cold temperatures. I made my own by taking a hacksaw to a metal door hinge. It is 2 1/4 inch long, 5/8 inches wide and I bent it to form to the post. It works great!!!

I've been dealing with broken tailgate bushing since last summer! I did purchase the 3d one from Shapeways which only lasted me two months in this cold Upstate NY weather. Decided to go with this Napa GM tailgate bushing #819-5709-01 for $12.00 a try and it works!! Its a snug fit but it does the job. This is for anyone with the early 2016 Tacoma. I hope this helps.

I have been looking all over the web and cannot find an answer, maybe someone on this thread can help.
My tailgate was recently stolen, and I was lucky enough to recover it on FB marketplace, but now I am noticing a lot of play on the driver side hinge. Am I just noticing this now or did a bushing fall out?

Is there a pushing on the driver side (2020) or is it metal to metal with a lot of play?

Did you have to modify the GM bushing? It looks like it is cut in the picture...
