Dang I wonder what we did in the 90's when these things had 115hp lol.
I wonder when people will stop bashing it simply because it doesn't do 0-60 in 5 seconds or tow 5,000lbs. I don't believe it's being advertised to do any of those things. If you want a Tacoma and need something fast or able to haul a lot, get the V6. If you don't need a speed machine and won't be towing a lot then the I4 will be fine if you are OK with the lack of "speed" (even though mine gets up to 80mph just fine...)

    Are you sure about that?
I've seen references to the 2TR-FE having dual vvt, but apparently makes 164 hp at 4000 rpm.
    2016 Tacoma spec still shows "2.7-Liter DOHC 16-Valve 4-Cylinder with VVT-i; 159 hp @ 5200 rpm; 180 lb.-ft. @ 3800 rpm", which would be unchanged for the last decade.

Actually, it *will* tow 5000 pounds, and very well. Hilux with the *same engine* is almost universally rated to 5500 pounds. There is a bunch of wacky american politics in the way over here, which has nothing to do with the vehicle's actual capability.

Interesting I didn't know that. Thanks for educating me! Not that I ever plan to tow that much but it's nice to know it could on the off chance I need to.

You should check out the 4-cyl and towing sections. You'll see that a lot of people actually go *considerably* beyond 5000 with them. Some I'd say up into the neighborhood of 10,000. While this would probably be ill advised, especially at high elevations and steep roads, and where you don't feel like going to jail, it is quite impressive what *can* be done.

I'm 100% positive. They did a change over to dual VVTI mid 2015 model year.

    Here's a window sticker

Another highly qualified Internet expert, by virtue of reading articles and watching YouTube. I rest my case.

That window sticker is very suspect. While it does say "dual", the power characteristics it describes are NOT the updated specs.

SMH... I can take a pic of the valve cover. If that helps.

That actually would help. Can't argue with physical evidence ;)

And I'm not trying to say that you're wrong by any means, just that the available data is not all that clear.

Indeed. Toyota's literature regarding the 3rd gen 2.7L seems to be all over the place. A few toyota techs/service guys have confirm multiple updates to the 2.7L along with 5 speed on this site a few months back.

    For what its worth, the dual-vvti units appear to have a new rocker cover, which includes the tag "dual" over "vvt-i", such as land cruiser prado;

    Hey OP,

I purchased a 2016 SR 5 speed 4 cylinder last October and have almost 7k on it and it's been a great truck. So many people complain abojt their not being enough power but it gets the job done just fine, plus the fact that the motor is Bulletproof! I've had some pretty heavy loads of firewood in it and it's had no problems handling it! Currently I'm running 265 75 16 duratracs and still not much power loss with the 31" tires. I'm averaging about 18-20 around town and anywhere from 22-24 on the highway! I don't haul any trailers or anything heavy but there is no way in hell id tow 6k behind a Tacoma anyways even if I had a V6! I'd own a fill size if I was hauling weight like that. I put a curt hitch on mine for a small fishing boat and the log splitter and the occasional towing. Here is how she sits now! In the near future looking at doing ome suspension with new rear Dakar leafs to get rid of the stock shitty leafs that have already started squeaking!

So let the haters hate but I love my truck!!!!

And before anyone gets all in a lather, I'm poking fun at all of us. After all, we're all here espousing our opinions on the internet, right? It's way more interesting than watching political pundits or reality TV.
