I searched and couldn't seem to find this. Does anyone know how much oil the filter has sitting in it after you shut the engine off?

Reason I ask is the dealer won't perform the 5k oil change for me on their dime, so I was thinking of just changing the engine oil and have them do the filter/oil change for the 10k service. I want to make sure to add the right amount of oil to the crankcase and the dip sticks on these trucks are funkier to read compared to other vehicles I've worked on.

My guess is the filter holds approx. 0.5qts

Owners manual says 6.2qt with filter and 5.8 qt without for a 2TR-FE engine and 6.1 or 6.2 qt (with tow package) with filter and 5.9qt without filter for the 2GR-FKS.

Thank you. So about 0.4qt difference. I guess if I add about 5.5qts of engine oil when I do the drain/refill i should be about good I'm hoping

I'll try that and see what the dipstick reading is looking like. The dipsticks on the 16s are a PIA to read

Try this... remove the dipstick... wipe it clean... go have a beer... slide your dipstick in and out....! It will read accurate.

I'd definitely change the filter. Especially on a new motor where there's most likely high amounts of metal in the filter.

newer filters can last a year or 20k+ miles easily with routine air filter maintenance. with cartridge systems, drain and fills are common everywhere else but in North America. because; oil & filter packages...

Guess I'm just slightly reluctant and would rather have the mess with the canister type filter. I'm sure it's not that difficult to work with but until I see a solid step by step vid on TW I'll wait. Or maybe I'll just make one myself :fingerscrossed:

just make sure you drain the oil and not the tranny fluid..... the oil drain plug is hidden (not in plain sight)...
