Considering taking the plunge on a new Tacoma, but I wanted to confirm that the 2015 V-6 engine used a timing chain now instead of a belt.

Anyone know for sure? I guess I could ask the dealer, but English is rare in dealerships around here.

chain. All current Toyota models use chains.

You may want to wait on the 2015 since the 2016 should be available in July. You can probably score a better deal on a 2015 if you wait a little or get the new model.

What oil does it spec? 5w30? My 4-Cyl uses 0w20. I know I could google it, but I'd rather hit up other owners....

Chain, it's not a Honda. Since you are asking about oil, switch to full synth.

I wish Toyota was like Mazda. For my CX9, Mazda has a relationship with Castrol. Every time I get an oil change using Castrol synth from my dealer, Castrol sends me a rebate check ranging from $20. To $30. My syth changes cost the same as a Dino change. Yea Mazda, boo Toyo.

Do you really think prices will soften once an announcement is made?

Nope. They'll go up. 'Get the last of this model' will be the mantra. :D

    Yep.

Engine bore/stroke may stay - 4.0 - but it will likely be the Dual VVT-I that's used in the 5th Gen 4Runners.

Yeah, but they use Castrol :(. That sucks.

I'd wait to see the 2016 anyways. You never know, it could have some of the features people have been wanting on there Taco's for years and then you'll have no regrets if you choose a 2015.

You've come to this conclusion based on some testing you've had done or what?

    Love to see your logic.

Since your asking, yes it's my own personal opinion. I thought this was a forum .

It jives with most of the opinions on the bob is the oil guy forums. I suggest anyone who is thinking about changing their own oil check the site out.

Do some quick google searches on the history of Castrol and synthetic oil. You'll figure out that they were the company that first started using lower and lower quality base oils in there product until they barely met the definition of synthetic according to the powers that be. Mobil tried to sue them over it and lost because, by law, if you use oil that's been through any cracking it meets the legal definition of synthetic oil even though it may not be truly superior to conventional oil. Castrol saved a dime on the dollar and now very few companies produce true synthetic products anymore becuase they have to compete with Castrols pricing.

Castrol oil is a no thank you for me on my forced induction Tacoma. I don't use oil from a company that takes the cheapest way out when they manufacture their premium oils. That's logical enough to me.

Not if there are surplus '15s on the lots which usually does not happen with Toyota but it may considering it is a new design and has been kept under wraps so secretively. I would assume that '15 production has already ceased since Toyota is switching over the SA plant for the 2016 Tacoma.

Of course it's a forum. Problem is many come to forums and read looking for truth and get a lot of old wives tales and junk science mixed in.

Thank you for providing your reasoning, which is solid. But what you've done by writing that is substantiate the information, giving others good reason to accept or reject your logic, as opposed to just being 'my opinion'. Since threads around here don't seem to go away, no telling who will find this useful info in the future.

I do like the 'Bob' site, but like other things, take the review inputs with a dose of skepticism. Test results OTH are a lot more meaningful. Why I asked if you'd happened to do any testing.

On a sports car forum I frequented for a lonnnnng time, we were fortunate to have 2 tribiologists as members, and they helped disperse a lot of hearsay and junk science (marketing) on oils, OCIs, etc. all based on long term testing and chemical analysis, as well as insider information.

I don't use Castrol anymore, and haven't for 10 yrs or so. I tend to stick with Mobil 1, but I also take advantage of extended OCIs (both time and/or miles) based on my own samples sent off to Blackstone. For example, on my 100k daily driven 1996 autox car, lab results were showing oil was quite good even in the 10-12k and 3 year (!) range.

Now for all those who will want to pile on and tell me I'm insane, just get your own lab test done. The results will be based on the health of the engine, how the engine is used as well as the type of oil and filter. It's worth a few bucks to 'know' rather than guess.

And if you are fortunate enough to have a healthy motor, your wallet will thank you for extending your OCIs, not to mention our environment.
