Good afternoon, I have just bought a new tacoma ( TRD- Sport 4x4 short box double cab).
Question I am looking to put a 3" lift kit, and wheels tires.I am not a hard core off roader but live in the mountains with nothing but off road trails, and national forest. I use the truck for a daily driver and want to keep it riding nice but also be able to off road with out any problems. can I get some advice on lift kits around $1000. and where to find them? seems there are quite allot of options out there and need some input.
    Thank you
    Patman.

I'm looking at getting a toy tech boss lift kit they come with coilovers that are adjustable from 3" to 1" of lift and a add a leaf in the rear with a bigger shock. that lift kit is around 1200 plus shipping, that is the one i am looking to get within this month from what I've read on here toy tech seems to make really awesome stuff so id start your search there.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to help you more with your question, and I'm sure you are already searching the forum, as there are lots 'o threads of a similar nature.

But I'm gonna guess your budget is too small. Seems just wheels and tires (depending on choice of course) will eat up most of that, and you haven't touched the suspension. Or was your $1k just for the suspension?

You'll also want to learn where the threshold of lift vs complexity is. Not sure if 3" is it or not.

Meaning at some point you have to start changing more than shocks/struts/springs, because the lift is affecting other things.

Like shaft angles, brake lines, ABS wiring, the need for different control arms, etc. All of which bumps the $ again.

I'm not interested in lifting, but I am interested in learning about these concepts............

Here's the "Patented bjmoose Keep It Simple Stupid" lift option. :D

    * ARB Old Man emu shocks front/back
    * ARB 884 springs in front.
    * 2" add-a-leaf spring in back
    * 265/70R17 All Terrain tires on factory rims.

    Why do I say that?
ARB "Old Man Emu" components are proven to work well by many users and soak up abuse much better than stock components in an off-road environment.
By picking 884 springs instead of 885 springs, you keep the lift closer to 2" than 3" . By keeping the lift closer to 2" you avoid needing replacement upper control arms and can easily align the truck correctly. You also minimize your CV axle shaft angle change.

By only going to 32" diameter tires (265/70R17) you don't need to worry about regearing or speedometer recalibration.

By not going wider than 265 width , you can mount on factory rims without needing wheel spacers. By sticking with factory rims and no wheel spacers, you don't change from the factory offset. By keeping wheel offset unchanged you minimizing the chance of having any problems with unintended engagement of the VSC vehicle stability control system, and minimize the amount of wheelwell trimming you have to do to clear the tires.

    Keep. It. Simple.

However, if you want to go more complicated than that - TacomaWorld has an entire suspension subforum to browse for everything from complicated, to INSANELY complicated. ;-)

I like it! Great post, including the logic/reasoning and the parts.

And to the OP. Thanks for making your #1 post in the correct forum and for adequately describing your goals. Too many roll in and shotgun question in all the wrong places, then get their bloomers in a twist when folks ask clarifying questions. You did well. Welcome to TW!

Thanks ya all for the reply s Specially 'Clearwater bill'. I am getting allot of feed back on the 'Toyotec' lift kits, and that is what I was first eyeballing.. Yes Bill the $1000. dollar range is approximate and just for a lift I will still need some guidance for wheel sets and tires

Thanks ya all for the feed back from some 'Veteran Toyo Owners' This is my first Toyota but most of the "off Road Clubs " up here in The Los Padres national Forest "Are Motoring Toyotas" and I know there dependable. I am getting allot of recommendations on these 'Toyo Tec' Lift Kits with thumbs up from every one. Any one else out there have any more Kit Recommendations as I am looking to buy this week. Also I was told to stay away from 'Pro comp' Kits as they were described to me as "Chinese Crap" any input from from anyone on these?
Thanks and nice to be apart of a 'Brother hood here with years of knowledge to pass along.
    Thanks Patman

Some people have ProComp on here.. I'd buy ToyTec or OME and you'll likely be very pleased. There are more expensive options, too, if that suits your fancy.

Welcome to TW CG PATMAN. When I was looking I started with OME/TOYTEC/Bilstein. I think that they are all good but I have not used any so cant say from personal experience. As I kept studying the forums and reviews I decided that I was going to eventually want more so rather than spending the money on one of the other lifts and then going mid travel later I decided to keep reviewing and drooling over everyone else's truck and save up for a bit. I am glad that I did. I ended up with a full ICON set up remote res front and rear with Camburg UCA's. The ride on road is more solid but in a good way and offroad is incredible. Bearing in mind your projected cap is $1000 for lift mine was just over $3000 for lift (for everything including AAL's, 3 degree shim, etc) getting some really good deals. Just to give you an idea of what you are looking at if you decide to go mid travel. I am happy with my choice and got exactly what I was truly looking for, but others are extremely happy with the Bilstein/OME /ToyTec lifts. Good luck with your choices and have fun in the forum.

You could always buy Icons but you have to sell an arm or a leg.... I do love them though.

2012silversport, Are you a fellow shipmate(puddle Pirate?) Thanks for the feedback brother. I'm not looking to go crazy just want a Good kit that will give me some clearance and facilitate taller tires. Not going to do any hard core 'Wheeling" but just want to be able to tackle the national forest where I live and still have a nice riding truck.
PS if ya are a fellow 'Coastie ' where are ya stationed and what is your rate? I'm retired and the CG being as small as it is we might know some same people.
