So this weekend I purchased a brand spanking new Tacoma Double Cab V6 4WD long bed. It has NO towing package. I am in the beginning stages of travel trailer shopping and have reviewed a majority of the posts in this forum.

I am looking to get to the factory towing capacity up to that of a truck equiped with a towing package of 6500 pounds.

    I have learned the following:

My truck has a factory set towing capacity of 3500 pounds.
Any modifications I make does not change this factory rating.
Certain modifications can increase my towing capacity, but does not change my factory rating.

    Questions:

Will the addition of a trans and oil cooler (aftermarket) void my factory warranty?

Will the addition of a 130 amp alternator and larger battery (aftermarket) void my warranty?

Will any changes to my suspension, such as air bags or aftermarket spring stops void my warrant?

Do I need to have a Toyota Dealership install any of these listed add ons using OEM products to avoid voiding my warranty?

I'm new to the Tacoma world and am very impressed by the amount of information on this website and looking forward to reaching out to all of you in the future!!

You are exactly correct. We needed to maintain a low monthly payment. This truck worked the best for our budget.

The Magnuson-Moss warranty act is what he's talking about, and it protects you from dealers blaming your new CAI for your leaf springs breaking or etc.

I am curious as to how much those modifications are going to cost you compared to an upgraded trim level.

The only time a warranty can be voided is if Toyota can prove the modifications caused any damage you may incur. Now, if you damage the truck towing 6,000lbs with your mods, and the truck is rated for 3,500, you can best believe you may lose that warranty fight. The truck did not come stock to promise more than 3,500 so they covered their end.

Do your research and put in quality modifications. You likely will not have a problem. But in the future, get the tow package lol. The cost is not that much.

Understand your dilemma. Upgraded an FJ Cruiser awhile back. Etrailer.com can help with parts and instructions. That way you can add on as time and budget allows. Don't need the extra alternator and heavy duty battery if you keep it charged before you leave. I never go more than four hours away most of the time. A fully charged deep cycle battery won't discharge that fast. Mounting the circuit breakers under the hood by the fuse block will work.
Any way I can help PM.

A slight problem with mods and warranty coverage Toyota does not have to prove anything to deny coverage the just do it then its up to you to prove your case.
As you stated the factory tow rating will not change due to any mods you make so if you tow or load above the factory rating's that in its self is grounds to deny coverage of certain related parts. Another thing to consider is the legal liability if something should happen while you are driving a overloaded truck.
Your only safe option is to load and tow below max factory rated load or get a truck rated to tow / haul what you have.

You might consider a popup camper. It would keep you well under the max towing capacity.
