2015 Power Steering Line Set Replaced!

    I have a 2015 Tacoma with a severe leak in my power steering line.

    I searched here and YouTubed the procedure but couldn’t find anything on the Gen 2.5, just the earlier Gen 2s.

    I got the two line retaining bolts off from the frame rail and cross member by the radiator, scoped out the union bolt and the two clamps that need to come off. Hopefully those won’t be an issue.

    The side that has the fitting going into the rack is a problem.

    It’s not too corroded so I sprayed it down with some aero-kroil, my go to penetrant, to sit over night. Regardless if it works, getting a wrench on it looks impossible to swing. There’s too much around it.

    I’m thinking after confirming I get the right set of lines, I might try to cut the line so I can get a socket on it. But even then it’s gonna suck.

    I’m open to any suggestions for:
    1) Getting that fitting off, and
    2) Torquing the new one down if I get to that step.

    I've yet to change a rack on a 2nd gen and we don't have rust here so I really can't give much advice on it other than go with whatever tools/methods you can figure out that work.

    take off the smaller nut first IIRC so the wrench can fit on the bigger one
    drop the trans bracket to gain more room
    use a flare nut wrench so it wont strip and i had to use a rod and hammer on the wrench
    PBlaster for a few days prior can do wonders to help free up rusty bolts

    Mine is just now starting to leak a bit.
    I watched a few YouTube videos and the easiest way to get to them is drop the front diff down a bit and take off the 2 frame support brakects.

    Nice. I always get nervous working with flare nuts. A good set of flare nut wrenches helps.

    I hear ya. I made sure to hand start it then push down on line till it seated then got it as tight as I could before putting a tool on it.

    I was fretting about how to torque that baby down - with the line in, options for wrenching are limited.

    It was the offset on these crowfoots with a small breaking bar that saved the day, the 17 mm one. My regular flare wrenches weren’t offset so :annoyed:

    Just enough room to get a few inches of swing, remove crowfoot, flip it to get that tiny but extra, flip it back to get the larger swing again, repeat until guddentight. No way to get a torque wrench on it.

    You can replace the power steering line set without further disassembly of any of the front end components.

    The line set, 2 hose clamps and double crush washer for the union bolt:

    The line set does not include the small return hose from the reservoir to the pump.

    The set is held down by three line retaining bolts. One on the frame rail extension just under the reservoir and two along the cross member on the top side. All were crusty and I had to tap the 12 mm sockets on in order not to strip. I played dental hygienist after I got them out.

    The hose and fitting going into the rack were the most difficult to reach:

    The fitting is 17 mm, I ended up using a crowfoot on a small breaking bar on it, getting the biggest swing I could get, flipping it and then getting that extra bit.
    BEWARE- when removed, have a clean rag to stuff in the hole to keep debris out.

    That hose clamp was a major PITA. I couldn’t get it compressed. The nipple it’s on is removable but I couldn’t get a tool seated or a socket on it after I cut the hose. The hose clamp was in the way. I ended up partially cutting the clamp with an oscillating tool then using a pry bar to pop it off.

    Installation is straightforward. I fed the lines from the left side of center to get the fitting and hose on the rack, got the retaining bolts on, then connected the pump - the union bolt is 38 ft lbs. First time using the quick connect/expanding hose clamps, what a breeze!

    Filled the reservoir, raised the front wheels, bled the system - 10 turns of the steering wheel back and forth. Took just under a quart of fluid.

    I did this on my back so I’m thinking folks with a lift will have an easier time.

    Nice write up . I’m going to need to replace mine soon as they’re looking pretty rusty right now, they haven’t started leaking yet so I want to replace them before they start. I usually buy my parts from Rock Auto and have never been disappointed but I think I’ll check Toyota for pricing first.

    Thanks! The Toyota part was spot on and for a job like this, I’d bite the bullet to get another 10 years out of it.

    Edit: I just fixed the write up to show the proper location of the two retaining bolts, it’s the cross member and not the radiator support. Apologies to all.

This is a custom build from the son of Bobby Rahal (Graham) and is his #1 build. 2015 bone stock minus a custom tune from OTT and Master Yota. OMU Springs over Bilsteins on the 98 with deckplate mod.

    Any chance you have the part number for the crush washer or did you just use a generic one? I ordered and finished replacing the tube set and totally forget the crush washer. Not sure its recommended to reuse one of them! lol

    And also the torque numbers for the frame support bracket....eeek. thanks

    The crush washer is called a "Pressure Gasket" and the part number for the 2015 Tacoma, V6 is 44327-30030.

    Here is where my line broke, right at the bend in the line.

    Apologies, just seeing this now. The Toyota line set had the crush washer and bracket in the assembly. Another benefit in dishing out :spending:
