I ran a compression test on my aunt's car. It's a Honda, however I figured this kinda thing applies across the board. Besides, I am going to talk her into dumping this car & getting a Toyota

    10 cranks
    throttle wide open
    engine warmed
    starter relay pulled

    Dry -
    1, 190
    2, 180
    3, 180
    4, 180

    Wet -
    1, 200
    2, 200
    3, 200
    4, 185

Whilst I realize the numbers are within an acceptable percent of each other, I have two questions.
    1. From what I have read, if any go up when doing a wet test, it means a compression leak via a worn-out piston ring or cylinder. Is this correct?
    2. Also, the ratio for the engine is 11:1. I found a chart which states the numbers for this should be around 250. It is a new/used engine with only 26,000, so I imagine the numbers should be higher, correct?

& this is why I am checking. I checked the oil. Down a quart & reeks of gas. She lives in the country, so any of her outings would result in the engine getting up to temp (should not reek). It's replacement engine still under warranty. She has only put 800 miles on it.

Oh, & plugs looks pretty bad for 800 miles.

ah I see. I would do a leak down test. it has been said it's better way of checking for cylinder leaks. I think it just compresses air in the cylinder and obviously looks for leaks.

There should be a spec in the FSM for what cranking pressure should be. The compression ratio alone doesn’t tell you what to look for. The fact that they’re all good makes it likely the rings are fine. It would be unusual for all rings to be bad the same amount

    She changed the engine herself?

The numbers are fine, I'd change the oil and plugs and watch it for at least an oil changes worth of miles.

maybe an injector is hanging up. maybe.

What I'm inferring is that the shop possibly didn't change anything.

This is one of the engines that shuts down one cylinder (being a 4) when you don't need it. LOTS of problems with these.

No. I am the only mechanically inclined one in the fam.
An oil change worth of miles on these things is like doing a change. 1 quart every 1,000 miles. I wish she had gone another route instead of having the engine replaced.

I'll tell ya what though, it's a PITB trying to find info on this vehicle. Took me an hour to figure out which one was the starter relay. It was not on the fuse map/diagram. I searched forums, looked for diagrams, etc. Finally I just did a search using the manufacturer & numbers from each relay until one came up "starter". Wish I had thought of that to begin with.

Hopefully I can locate some kind of FSM. I don't like the way the engine sounds or feels.... 26,000 should be like buttah.... or close....

Something sure sounds off here. Don`t know enough about Honda.

Helminc says service manuals not available. You could Check Honda dealers.

I can not see a engine installed without all new fluids !!

She drove 800 miles already down a down a quart of oil and the oil smells like gas .

I would change the oil that way you have a known baseline to start.

26,000 miles I would hope it would not use a quart of oil in 800 miles

Engine under warranty but you would still be stuck for the labor ??

    Good Luck!!

Hmm not sure of the specific problems those things face, I guess that’s why we buy Toyotas! This video is more about Toyota but Honda probably has similar problems https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=v4JS7PybV2k

It was this line they came out with "Earth Dreams". I know Odysseys & CR-V's were two models that had them installed. I have a friend whose Odyssey engine went & another friend's whose is still with original engine, but is constantly putting oil in it & it sounds like crap. There was a lawsuit in 2018 for the 1.5L CR-V's in which Honda settled, however many with the other sizes are having the same major probs as well. I first happened upon this when researching my friend's odyssey & the oil consumption. Learned about the "great on paper" idea about the cylinders. Anyway, owners of these engines burn through plugs & oil, pistons blow, engines seize, etc. Some get some miles out of theirs, others it happens quickly. Some are fine. There's a lot of PO'ed people out there on forums & complaint sites. Honda stopped production in 2020.
I tried to steer my aunt away from engine replacement. I did....

Basically I'm just running some tests to bring to their attention or maybe make my aunt feel better if nothing comes of them. I realize I am a nobody to Honda (they did the work), however by informing them, it'd be their call as to whether she should take it elsewhere to get it professionally checked or if they would prefer to do it.

I'm not too great at reading plugs, however presuming these are 800 miles old, I don't think they look too great. & even of they weren't replaced, I don't think they match the worn plug example in the charts. I'm just noticing one looks wet....

Those plugs have more than 26000 miles

The old crusty burned oil ring around their necks from a leaking valve cover grommet.

edit: may just be oily vapor that burned on but that makes it seem even older.

That ashen of a grey takes a long time too. It has a 100K mile look

At least 100K. I changed my Odyssey plugs at 100K and they looked new compared.

I have wondered why only the contacts are addressed when trying to find info on them. That's why I post the whole plug. Thank you!

Gasoline is so bad now, reading plugs is passe'. nothing to adjust anyway.

I realize you want to know more about what you look at but now it's better to just stick to a change interval no matter what they look like.

    This person didn't.

edit: I would be trying to find out where this 'engine' came from and what happened to the old one?
