Hi, I’ve got a 2015 Tacoma DCLB with 67k miles in Idaho. I’m noticing rust collecting, mostly around the frame welds (mostly surface and non structural as of now, from what I can tell). I know older years had major frame rust issues, but hoping those issues would’ve been adressed by 2015. Wondering, how much rust is “normal” for its age/year? Are there any recalls or known issues with this year I should be aware of?
Im willing to put in some preventative work as I’d like to keep it for a long time, anyone have suggestions for good rust proofing paint, products or techniques I should be using? Will post some pics tomorrow. Thanks!

The easiest is hit the surface rust with a wire brush then spray rattle can black paint. When it dries, use woolwax or fluid film on the frame 1-2x per year.

There's a ton of threads (250) here on frame maintenance, rust, etc.

The frame rust recall was extended to 2017 models. I'm due to take mine in tomorrow, actually. The major consensus is what @Grossomotto said. Get off what you can, spray it and follow up with Woolwax/fluid film.

2017's dont get the spray but they do get an inspection and covers.

2015 is full spray and clean.

The 2017 does include the spray according to the notice I got from Toyota.

If you want to check for recalls, all you need is your VIN and this website:

I'll correct myself. I see why you said that. According to the dealership it was sprayed with CRC from the factory. When I didn't believe them (they told me it had been done previously, but I couldn't find anything on the Toyota Owners website) they let me look at their system which showed my VIN range had been. Unfortunately that also means the 10 year warranty only applies from first use date and not from the date of service. The good news is in all my time on TW and according to the dealership, I have never seen any 3rd gen even close to needing to have the frame replaced and neither have they. They even told horror stories about around 2009 when Toyota would just write people checks for their trucks which were just a couple of years old. The trucks were then taken to the crusher instead of having the frame replaced.

Thanks everyone for the info! I took a look back through all the service records, and it looks like the previous owner already had the frame inspected - “no frame seal” and “no perforation”. I’d say the level of rust I have is “surface”, but still concerning, let me know what ya think (pics attached).
I’ll work on rust control/prevention with wire brush, paint and fluid film.
I called the dealer and he said the customer support program on this will cover “perforation” on my vehicles frame out to 7/18/27.

That's definitely light and some may even be dirt. But I'd definitely address it like you're planning before it gets worse. Hell, some of it may even just rub off without a wire wheel.

I love my 17 Tacoma. It just rolled 28000 and living in Ohio rust is always a concern. I had Toyotas so called rust treatment which I think was worthless just like their frames. I have no plans to get rid of my truck and will just drive it and try to keep the frame free from salt and that other corrosive crap they spray on the roads now but I am still seeing considerably more surface rust this year on the frame. My wifes 13 Sienna which is a unibody has zero rust anywhere underneath driving the same roads and has 68000 miles on it.
Toyota led everyone to believe this was taken care of and obviously it was not. Why fix the problem when we still by them anyway.
