Question has anyone been able to get there engine repaired for the piston slap issue? My 2015 Tacoma has 600 miles and sounds horrible for the first 4minutes or so.Toyota says it is normal.Listened to one of the service writers Tacoma 2015 and it was quite. There response was some do it some don't.So how is it normal then?
Any help or replies would be appreciated.I have owned a 2011 and a 2008 with 4.0 no noise?

Hi John, I have a 2015 Limited when it had 0 miles on it it was very loud at cold start up. The truck has 6200 miles on it and quieted down quite a bit. I had a 2010 sport that made noise at start up until I sold it at 86000 miles . Its under warrantee, so use it for a while and see what happens . It is true that many of the tacomas make nose when cold....good luck

My 13 has increased cold start up engine noise. These 4.0 motors are noisy. Mine sounds like it also has an exhaust leak tick at the exhaust manifold. Hope not.

Both the 11 and 13 V6s I've had/have are noisy when cold. Little less noisy when warmed up. If youre not use to the 4.0 noise, you'll think there's something wrong. Most likely nothing wrong. These motors are very reliable. Very few issues and known to last 100s of thousands of miles.

Get it checked if it makes you feel better though.

EDIT: Piston slap comes from pistons that have become seriously worn out of shape. Not something that could happen to a motor with so few miles.

It's when a motor has many miles and the pistons become worn out of shape. When cold they bang against the cylinder walls making a bad noise. Once warmed up they expand no longer banging around and making noise. They have to be really worn out to do this.

Gotcha. It wouldn't happen on a new motor.

It's almost definitely not "piston slap" on a truck with 600 miles. If it is - don't worry, you'll get complete engine replacement well and safely within the warranty period.

If you want to make yourself crazy, read this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/13-v6-4500-miles-and-my-motor-may-be-shot.317054/

tldr - they replaced the oil pump - then the whole engine (short block) AND THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE.

Now, you can blame poltergeists if you want - but what I take away from that is that the basic engine was sound (pardon the pun) and something attached to it was noisy. That peripheral attachment will eventually fail and need replacement. Under warranty hopefully, but if not - at least when it goes it'll be immediately obvious what to replace.

The amount of time and grief you can spend diagnosing "unexplained noise" can turn you grey before your time.

Advice from here: don't worry, be happy, enjoy your truck.

What amazes me is that members with new vehicles seek guidance on a forum. I understand that they're wanting to figure out the issue, but there is a warranty for a reason. If I had a new vehicle that I believed was having problems, I'd be taking it up with the dealer. Not bashing OP, but I am surprised so many individuals seek answers on a forum. Out of warranty vehicles, I completely understand seeking advice from multiple sources.

I suggest OP takes it back to the dealership and explain his overall concerns with the truck. Even tell the tech that you would like to see the test results and everything that was performed. If they say "everything's normal", ask them what causes the sound. If they don't give you a satisfactory answer, try another dealership that will. My local dealership is horrible/shady, so I travel an extra thirty miles to get the service I expect.

Seems to be more common then people think. I've been reading about it alot more recently. Hopefully it is not a serious issue with the 12's to 15's. I can hear a slight knock on cold start up with mine that I'm concerned with but hopefully doesn't give me any issues or warranty time.

If it gets worse of course. This is my second 2nd gen and I don't remember my 07 doing it. It only does it sometimes and is very faint, just keeping a ear out for a change in volume now.

If your motor is making the noises the same as that video, then I'd worry. Not normal.

I can agree being ocd with noises, vibes ect. makes you crazy, ask me how I know. However, knocking in any engine is not normal and if the OP's is that prominent he needs to get it looked at by a reliable dealer. Mine is not, its only on cold mornings but not to the extent I need dealer time asap.

How many damn times are we going to say take it to the dealer? There isn't anything we can do about it, so OP go to the dealer. :annoyed:

So I have "piston slap" in my 250000 mile XJ 4.0 because Chrysler can't keep tolerances... Never heard of and don't think it's very likely in my Taco 4.0. I think someone googled wrong...

Time for a second opinion. Just because one guy said it was doesn't mean it is. It certainly isn't normal to have piston slap on a brand new 4.0.
