What is the point of the hubs with the NSK bearing? Is that just something you need when it breaks? Or do people replace them as an upgrade?

Mostly replace when they wear out. If you’re running big tires, a lift, or doing other things that might put more wear on your hubs you want to get the strongest components that bolt right in. These also come with the bearings already pressed in which is typically a pain to do.
I thought my hubs were beginning to show wear at one point but it was a combo of bad balancing and brake noise so I never ended up needing these.

Got it, and is that common per say that they wear out after a lift and bigger tires?

They wear out in general especially if they have to deal with more weight, towing, lots of 4x4 use, things that put strain on them. Bearings especially are wear items, and in this case it’s usually easier to replace the whole hub assembly.
    Are you interested?

In the case of the Tacoma that mostly seems to be the case, probably due to having IFS. The easiest way to check your hubs is to lift the wheel off the ground grab either side of the tire and shake it to see if there’s play.
