Base model Rav4 with projector low beam housings, regular halogen stockers.

Passenger side low went out Sunday..separate low and high bulbs. Replaced the bulb and nothing. Figured it was the bulb so tried another one and same result.

Checked fuses for left and right headlight (which I learned today re the separate), both look fine. I bought new fuses tonight just to double check it tomorrow.

The driver's side low works as do both highs.

If the fuse doesn't fix it, what else could it be? Do they have a separate relay for each side as well?

I have a basic test light and was getting power off one of the 2 plug contacts, don't think I had on the other but it was getting dark out so I stopped.

If the fuses have power on both sides it would have to be wiring.

You say you have power at the headlight connector but what about ground?

Was it raining? One of our trucks at work shorts out and blows the bulb when it rains.

Not sure as I have the basic test light only..I grounded it to my battery negative.

I think the fuses are good by a visual inspection at least, the fact I got power on one of the two prongs of the socket would bear that out I believe? Should I get power on just one of the two or both?

Nope. Had the ride 6 yrs and first time I've needed to change it.

Fuses need to be tested either on the exposed contacts on top of the plugged in fuse (if using a test light), or on the Diode/continuity setting on the multi meter, if fuses are unplugged. Multimeter is $17 at Walmart.

Fuse may look OK, but not work.

You need to ground the test light to the other prong in the bulb socket. The test light will then not light because of a bad ground (since a test light works on the same basic principle as a halogen bulb). You will then need to hunt for the bad ground using a wiring diagram. Probably a broken wire or rotted off ground lug somewhere.

Just switch the test light lead to battery POS to test the neg prong.

And yes, you should use the test light (lead hooked to battery NEG) to test both sides of the fuse when the fuse is plugged in to confirm its good

Take this cover off of the headlamp and look at the wires. I had a customer with the same problem and this was the cause.

Hook the other end of your test light up to battery positive to check the ground.

Fuses are checked with them installed, they have test points on top of them. You should have power on both sides with the lights on.

I want to kick myself for missing that, but other hand with all the family stuff on my plate I'll chalk it up to rushing and be grateful it was a simple fix because of my stupidity..haha
