Have been casting about the internet looking for consolation for my toyota tacoma rust issue
and found you folks. Took my 2012 tacoma to dealer after receiving notice it was due for frame
Inspection due to potential rust issues. Was told i did not need frame replacement but a bunch of other issues were apparent. Here is picture of front shock, has anybody ever seen a shock this unrecognizable? While removing the shock, the abs sending units broke off and now needs replacing. Every flange and anything else connected to the frame looks like the shock. This is a major diaster for a 9 year old truck. I gotta say, i’ll never buy another upload_2021-7-18_15-5-59.jpg

Are you the original owner? That's crazy. I have a 2013 with 110k miles owned since new in Vermont that nowhere looks like that. Was it kept in a heated garage in Winter? I have a great heated garage but my truck sits outside due to the effects of rust on the components. I also treated it from Day one, mile one before it left the lot.

Yes, i am original owner, bought new in 2012. Two weeks before i took it to shop for recall exam, i took out spare tire and thru it away. The rim was delaminating with rust. A better term was that it was “rotting”. It was not useable. I have a 32 chevy with original rims that are just fine. I cannot believe what i have seen under this truck

Hi jude, i have always left it outside like all the vehicles i have owned for last 65 years with never a problem with rust. (A rusted out tire rim? Gotta say i had never seen one before).
I have never been aware that a spray on frame rust inhibitor was available or even necessary.
And can’t imagine having to do it several times a year

I don’t think it’s the trucks fault. It’s probably the brine they put on the roads in the winter.
The shocks are not made by Toyota and probably not the rim. My wife works for the local town where I live and I know some of the highway dept guys and the brine they put down eats the trucks so bad the parts fall off. And some of the parts are made from thick heavy steel. Any body on frame vehicle will need protection. Very bad

yeah I understand I basically treated it with what the dealership offered at the time for $$ the did fluid film once a year. I missed it last Fall because I got the CRC done and honestly don't drive the truck that much anymore.
I just remember seeing the problems since 1GEN then my 2006 was a mess. I didn't want the same for my trd or. I pretty much knew it would be my last new truck. Here is my shock pic I just took. I haven't given it a bath in a while & live on dirt road.
Good luck that stinks! Welcome to TW.

How do you let things get to that point then complain.

Oh yeah the spare I would take down and grease the heck out it. Nothing like a frozen cable or tire rot. I had to replace my spare due to weather cracking. Scary when you have to use one. Also I make sure the whole rear drum and wheel gets greased with whatever the shops use when rotating including my spare now.
