    Hey all,

just thought I would pass this post recall update on:

as many of you know the SAIS filter can degrade and damage the pump and valves can fail causing codes to put our 2.5 gens into limp mode. 2013-2015 have a second run of the cycle and engine off to assist with the moisture but still have the filter that can be replaced with the Unifilter.
At this point 2012 is the only year that can has a recall out (Check your Toyota owners page to see if you’re eligible)
I had my recall completed last week (since I haven’t had any codes they replaced my valves and changed my filter, had I thrown codes I would have gotten a new pump and valves)

however I was skeptical what kind of filter they would use to “fix” the degredatiob issue...and upon taking it apart they used the same parts... same degradable foam filter... just an update and recommendation to do the uni-filter or bypass.

Interesting that Toyota is finally awake on this issue. I have removed that foam chunk and placed a Uni-filter on my 2015. unfortunately I discarded that OE cone piece when putting the Uni-filter on. I understand Uni-filter will not pass SMOG visual in California.

Post up in your local area thread asking if anyone has one sitting around they'd like to get rid of.

It would really surprise me if the filter was identical to the recalled one. I'll bet a nickel it's a different foam with a lot better durability, even if it looks the same.

I don't know.. I didn't look at the previous but it sure looks identical and feels like cheap foam. My reading of the recall sounded like it was the valves and pump that they were focused on rather than the foam being the culprit but I am not Toyota haha.

in anticipation of visual inspection at my first, and yet to be scheduled smog, i have just received this item with the OE cone, to replace the UNI filter. i opened to view the foam and it is intact and dirty.
    IMG_0968.jpg
..i will continue use of the UNI filter until the day of inspect.

I ordered the aftermarket UNI filter and installed it after watching the Tacomaholic YouTube channel explanation and proper install. Very good resource by the way, I’m sure everyone already knows about this guy.

Anyway when I clicked over to the Amazon page one of the links led me to a K&N offering. I ordered this one because I liked the idea of being able to clean and re-oil the filter as needed.

But frankly I don’t know how good or bad this circumstance is. But the filter does not have a way to clamp to the inlet pipe of the air pump. It fits tightly over and forms what I would consider an adequate seal. But you can move the filter to the all the way in making contact with the inlet pipe which would shut off all airflow or slide it all the way out freely.

This creating a circumstance where something bumping it would possibly restrict all airflow. Not saying it’s better or worse than the others as I do not know. Just saying this filter has this to contend with if you were to consider it for the application.

Grab a small hose clamp to keep the filter in place. Personally though I would not use an oiled filter here

Thanks but no place for a clamp on this filter. That's what I was referring to. It is a nice tight no leak pop on fit, but that's it for available ways to hold it in place.

My experience with oiled filters is pretty extensive in other industries. No real diff with the flow just cleanable and longer-lived before necessary replacement. If you're referring to vapor film intake where the application is concerned that is. It is very minimal and I can't think of anything downstream that it would negatively affect. I'm considering replacing it for the lack of capability though. That is unless I can think of something to remedy the concern.

Are you saying you didn't throw codes and they did the recall? I'm thinking about going to my local dealer with the notice, asking about it and hoping for the best. I've done the Uni filter mod just in case.

considering toyota went through one generation of frame fiascos and then another generation of frame fiascos and now a 3rd gen with again more frame replacement games

i wouldnt be all too surprised if toyota is reusing the same identical foam

Precisely. For 2012 only as far as the last time I looked. I wouldn’t have your uni filter on when you go in though.

If you have a 2012, and you were eligible for the recall, you will get new valves. If you throw code you will get new valves and a new pump. The valves seem to be the fail point that causes the trucks to go into limp mode. After I got the recall I just took the crappy filter out and put the uni filter on

What is the recall number. I remember seeing something about this in the past and mine is a 2012 and I now have a P0418 fault that returns immediately at startup and the battery is new and relays are good to the Air Pump

It’s stupid of Toyota how they’re only recalling the 2012 models.

There was never a recall, it was a customer support program/extended warranty (10 years from date of first use) on the SAIS components for 2012 V6 Tacoma's only.

13+ had updated SAIS logic to help prevent the issues that the 2012 trucks had.
