Hello all, new guy here. Anyway, I have a 2012 tacoma 4 door with a 6' bed with a cap.
I really dont use the truck that much because I have a company van. Only 35000 miles, and I dont really take it in the snow, I'm in lower NY where alot of salt is used. I did an oil change recently and was shocked when I saw the amount of rust when I clawled under there. The frame isnt as bad as the front end components but still shows lots of rust along all the welded areas. I've owned older 20170605_152544.jpg fords and chevy trucks in the past but never encountered this level of rust. Is this worth a trip to the dealership or are they going to tell me to get lost ?20170604_102029.jpg 20170604_102005.jpg 20170605_152433.jpg

Leave it parked outside in moisture and rain without washing the salt off it in the winter? That'll kill frames and suspension bit faster then pretty much anything else you can do. Do you flush the underside when you can in the winter and spend some time in the spring getting everything you can reach flushed of all salt. If they use brine in your area you have to really step up your underside cleaning as it'll absolutely destroy steel.

Yikes. You could try the dealer, but I don’t know if they’ll help you out. I would suggest the following; get the underside as clean as possible, get sandpaper and/or wire brush and scrape off the scale. Then get about 6 cans of rustoleum rust reformer and spray everything that even resembles rust, it will stop rust in its active form and turn it a blackish color. Let it sit at least 24 hours, then spray paint black paint over the rust reformed area. Let it dry about 2 days. Take it somewhere and get it fluid filmed or krown applied, or just buy the fluid film and apply it yourself. Krown or fluid film will help prevent any more rust, or at least slow it down. With lots of salt, try to keep it sprayed off as much as possible. Reapply fluid film as needed.

The Dealer will not help you,as your frame is not bad enough.Wash the underside and Fluid Film coat everything, and then every year start washing the underside once every week too get the salt off.

Would that not wash off Fluid Film in couple of months or worse, push the salt further in places it can do more damage? I Fluid Film my truck once a year, but don't wash the frame during winter months for that reason and do a proper cleanup in spring. Just curious what others do and recommend.

That looks pretty bad for a '12.

A Tacoma with rust issues?! Never heard of such a thing! That does look pretty bad for a 12 with such few miles

I'm going to get to the dealer this week, I'm not holding my breath. As far as the truck, Its a great pickup but I dont think I'll be keeping this for too much longer because of this problem or will i consider another Toyoya product. I dont expect a vehicle to last forever, and I do realize things start to rust over time but I dont need to climb under there every year to spray or undercoat the undercarriage of this vehicle. I dont have to do this to my other car and 10 yr old suv and their in great shape underneath.
I'll post after I have dealer look at it.

So, just a neglected frame/undercarriage basically.

    yep..
Honestly looks like your average salt belt truck that someone never took care of. Plenty of them out there. Sometimes when I see a Tacoma in a parking lot I take a look underneath and 95% don't seem to take any preventative measures underneath. Fluid Film or krown will hypothetically stop the rust in its tracks as long as you keep applying it a few times a year.

Bump, what did your dealer say? My 2005 with a stock frame looks nothing even close to that!
