An associate of mine is trying to sell his 2012 TRD Sport PreRunner 2WD with 148k miles for $17,500. Is this a fair price? The truck is in good condition and just sits in the driveway now.

Interior: The only noticeable blemishes in the interior are on the edge of the drivers side seat, the leather has started to split.

Exterior: On the exterior the rear bumper is slightly bent out on the left side (see picture).

Can the buyer expect to get another ~100k miles on it before expensive repairs?

Nice truck but the price is high according to book value. $16,000 is more like it for a private party sale. If it’s been maintained well then it should be good for a long while.

Make sure the frame is good if you’re paying that price.

Ounce of prevention, pound of cure. How well it's been maintained up until now will weigh upon the remaining lifespan. That being said, get to 250k miles in a Tacoma and it's barely broken in...unless the frame is rusty.

As far as the price goes? Everything is ridiculously inflated right now, especially used vehicles. But the going rate really depends on where you are. No location information = "check KBB and NADA" as a default answer.

BTW, PreRunner = 2WD. There are no 4WD PreRunners (from the factory anyway). Saying "PreRunner 2WD" is like saying "ATM machine"

Haha thanks for the info. I live in Raleigh, NC. I've been casually looking for a Tacoma but haven't had much luck.

Thanks for correcting me on the PreRunner = 2WD. Will save me from looking stupid when I go look at the next truck.

That bumper may adjust just with some loosening of bolts and patience.

Does the seller have service records/full history?

What kind of 'leather' seating. Was it some factory option (likely pleather) or is it a good aftermarket product?

Getting a loan value from a CU would give a hint of the true value. Regardless of what things sell for or advertise for, loan value is a useful number. And pretty close to what an insurance carrier would work from if totaled.

Do you need 4wd? If so, this isn't it. But if you don't, it may be worth more investigation.

One thing I've done over the years is made an offer. If declined, left my number with them and told them to call if they changed their minds. Sometimes they didn't call. A few times they did, and I felt I got a good value.

This is great advice thank you! Please excuse my ignorance but what does CU stand for? Credit Union?

I just put down 15k on my 2nd gen 4x4 with 36,000 miles. Got them to 27,000. Just to give you an idea. My payments are only 250 a month. I couldn't justify paying 40+ thousand for a new 3rd gen. You may want to save a little more or put down on something nicer?

Yes. Often will be the place for best rates and valuations.

I paid $14,000 for my ‘07 prerunner with 70k. Only added bonus that came with it was a pappy cap

Thank you everyone for the responses. This is all good info.

The market for used Tacomas here in Raleigh is tough -- everything is super inflated. I'm sure there is a thread for this somewhere on the forum so if you have a link please post it -- this is the first used vehicle i've ever looked for and need general tips on how to search for one. I've been looking at craigslist, kbb, edmunds, etc. Then my "associate" told me he is selling his which resulted in this thread.

I'm guessing I need to be checking the sites every day and ready to pull the trigger.

autotempest is a really good one to check that puts a whole bunch of other site listings into one. Doesn’t get everything, but it’s better than trying to keep track of each individual website. You can also create alerts for new listings

I didn't know you could get a TRD sport package on a PreRunner...I thought TRD packages only came on 4WD models

Paid around $24k for my 2012 double cab, long bed, 4x4 a few years ago with 85k miles.

had some upgrades done to it. Front and rear suspension and upper control arms. Leather seats. Heated seats. Was in great condition.

I think the price on the 2wd is high, especially with the miles. Market is crazy though.

Nope, both TRD Off Road and Sport were available on Prerunners.
