I purchased my 2012 tacoma in Alabama from a small dealer back in 2017 without doing any homework. It's a Toyota Canada build. There is a fair amount of rust. I'm aware of the recall that is out there. However - Since i'm not in a cold weather salt state there is no local solution. Any Florida dealers handle these coatings? I've spoke to my local dealer about this and that's about that best advice they had.

Hoping I can find a reasonable solution. I only have 102k miles and want to keep it around as long as possible. If I cant find a way to get this done I'd rather sell her before she gets too bad.

First of all, it's not a recall - it's the settlement of a class action suit, and is good for 12 years from the in-service date of the vehicle. So, in your case, 2024.

What do you mean by a 'fair amount of rust'? Pictures would help. If dealers in FL won't apply a coating, there are 3rd party options. Or you can always do it yourself.

Don’t rely on some internet forum, call Corporate Toyota and get the facts.

In the dealer review for my frame replacement, rust to the point of holes, 10mm or larger was the point they where looking for. NOT a hole you made because it was a weak point, but on rusted out that far...

Haha an internet forum isn't my first line method of trying to get this handled. If anything it's a last ditch effort.

try another dealer. They may be far between, but someone has to be able to do it. Even if they have to download the instructions. Or like someone else said, call Toyota Corporate, and maybe they can massage a local dealer into doing it for you

Call Toyota Corporate it makes no sense that any dealer can`t do the spray I could understand the warm weather States not wanting to do the job.

If I am from up North working Down south on a Major Job does one need to drive the 1500 miles home??

The local dealer I spoke with said it's a matter of having the appropriate equipment to make it happen. They'd be more than willing to do it if they had the means. Since it's in Alabama where there is little to no demand for it they do not have the equipment, which is evidently too costly to justify having.

Didnt the letter only go out to those in the salt belt? Regardless of the vehicle history in Canada; op is in the south.

I thought the letter I received stated this was only effective in certain states.

My understanding was that Toyota was only obligated to provide the coating for free in 'cold weather states', of which there is a list somewhere. But my info could be out of date. As someone said above, call Corporate.

I’ve explained everything to corporate on two or three different occasions. If I lived in the salt belt I could waltz my happy ass to a dealer and have them do it because thats not unchartered for them. Nobody here does it. Toyota won’t send them the equipment because it’s a waste of resources with such little demand.

    Road trip up north.

Or clean that rust up yourself. Scrape flaking paint off; scour with steel wool. Hit it with rust converter, then a handful of coats of semi gloss black. Then invest in a spray gun and woolwax or fluid film- apply twice a year. Many people up north including me use that stuff to keep corrosion at bay. Works wonders.
