I recently went mudding 2 days ago and the yesterday I noticed my truck was having some issues starting. When I turned the key it would click and after a second the engine would turn over no problem. All lights on the dash and the radio will turn on. I came out of school today and when I went to turn on the truck all lights came on but the truck didn’t even try to turn over. I tried again and it fired right up.

Could this be an issue with the starter or alternator? I replaced the battery back in June, so I dont think that could be it. Plus, all the lights on the dash come on no problem.

    Any help is appreciated

The starter solenoid can be rebuilt with new contacts and plunger about 35 dollars and takes less than an hour. One of the easiest repairs you can do. The hardest part is unbolting and removing the starter from the truck. You would have to do that even if you elected to replace the starter for hundreds of dollars.

So what makes more sense: ( pick one )

    1. Repair starter using a step by step video for 35 dollars.
    2. Replace starter with a new one for several hundred dollars.
    3. Replace starter with a rebuilt (of questionable lineage?) for a hundred dollars.

Duralast... You get what you pay for IMO.

I would much rather have a Denso. OEM.

Don't bother taking it down to get tested off the truck. It will pass with no load on it, happened to a buddy. In his case the contacts were worn out. In your case there is probably a bunch of mud in there. Check out the video posted and pull the starter and clean it all out.

I sold auto parts at NAPA and Kragen both, you don't want an aftermarket starter. Fix the one you've got. If you can get the starter out of there the hard part is done.

They load tested the battery at O’Reillys. And if I can fix my OEM one I definitely will, id rather not deal with an aftermarket one

Yeah, the battery test and alternator test in the truck is legit. I was just saying the starter bench test isn't 100%.

Great video! I have 150k on my truck now, will put this on my list of preventative maint tasks to do. I'd rather pay the $30 to replace the contacts and plunger before I need to than to risk getting stranded someplace. Looks pretty easy once the starter is removed.

It is very easy, esp on a Prerunner. The 4X4 makes it harder to get the starter out, but the solenoid is the same.
