Not too happy about this. 2010 with less than 50k miles on it and the AC Compressor has failed. My mechanic says it is definitely a case of early death and is not normal to go this early. Dealer wants $140 to tell me what can be seen visually just by opening the hood.

Has anyone had a compressor go this early? Customer service just reminds me that warranty is for 36k.

I say lame and it makes me concerned that these trucks just aren't built as well anymore. What next?

My first year ('95) 1st Gen Tacoma with factory A/C had 120+K on it this February when I sold it and the A/C still worked fine. It's never even needed a refresh. Frankly, I don't expect my new one to be any different and feel your failure is unusual. I know it doesn't soothe the blow, but I'd bite the bullet and get it fixed. It's kinda like replacing the windshield on your new truck at your own expense after owning it for a week (which I had to do). There's nothing comforting that can be said.

AC should come on with the defroster, right? So, he probably did run it throughout the winter...

    Missouri is similar-ish, weather-wise.

Yeah: 50K is not good service life for an a/c compressor.

I'd put it into the commonly failing parts list for a Tacoma. Not cool when the dealer wants $2000+ just for the compressor. It's not as common as wheel bearings or ticking blower fans but it's still up there. After all it's a Delphi part (read: GM).

    https://www.google.com/#q=a/c+flashing+site:tacomaworld.com&start=0

Mine failed last year. The rubber in the clutch let go so it squeals if turned on; I pulled the fuse to prevent that as my clutch bearing is still good. Not sure if the rubber came apart due to age or excessive compressor load but I'm going to change the whole unit just to be sure.

Heck, the A/C failed in my 2009 as well and it only had 28k miles at that point.

Go back to Nippondenso, Toyota, please...

Thanks for the responses everyone. Yes, with defrost the AC worked all winter and I drive everyday.

I was looking on Rockauto.com and they have a Denso part and a Delphi part...did the truck come with a Delphi? I was going to buy the Denso and my mechanic said he would put it on for me.

What really rips me is that the dealer wanted $140 to tell me what my mechanic can see just by looking at the compressor.

I agree that these seem to fail prematurely, I've seen a few reports here and my mother had to have here replaced as well. She's also in New England, and I bet she hardly uses it in the summer. (She likes the hot weather)

I had mine fail on my 2011 while it was still under warranty. And it only was under warranty for about 1-1/2 years before I was over the mileage.

First, you HAVE to find out what failed on the compressor. If it was internal, DO NOT just replace the compressor or you'll be doing this all over again very soon. If it let go internally, there's junk all through the system now. I has to be flushed and most likely will need a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, drier/accumulator, and possibly the evaporator if it can't be flushed. Sounds like overkill, but trust me, it's not. I worked in the auto a/c repair business. We had the customer sign a waiver if they refused to fix the system and just swap the compressor and no warranty. No compressor manufacturer will warranty the compressor unless you can provide proof that all components were changed and proof of a system flush. It's a big money business. FYI, most full a/c jobs including labor were around $1k average.

Mine failed last year on my 2008 with about 60k miles on it.
From what I read at the time, it seems to be a fairly common issue. As others, my clutch failed.
Toyota wanted over $500 (if I remeber correctly) just for the clutch. I ended buying a complete aftermarket compressor/clutch for about the same price from my local auto parts store.
I was tempted to by a OEM brand from Rock Auto, but figured the first one didn't last long, so why buy the same thing.
Since it was only the clutch, there was no issue with debris getting anywhere in the system so the install was quite straight forward.

    Good luck

    Shawn.

pretty sure mine failed yesterday with only 2400 miles on the truck. blower works, but even with the ac light lit it cycles hot air out. back to the dealer we go!

The A/C compressor in mine says Denso on it. Am I lucky I don't have a Delphi compressor?

Delphi makes a decent compressor, but the nod goes to Denso on models where both manufacturers make the same compressor.

If it was low, you have a leak. Technically, it's illegal in the US to add refrigerant to a known leaking system, although it isn't something a private person needs to worry about. It's more a law for shops. Whatever you do, do NOT put refrigerant with a leak stop in it. It's the worst thing you could ever do to your 'A/C system.

It's possible it was low from factory and seemed to work ok when you picked it up and only needed a correct charge. This happened to me on an old Corolla. Keep an eye on it though. In my experience, dealers don't spend alot of time leak checking.
