hello guys so I have a weird problem going on and I hope this is a appropriate location to post this, I have a 2tr-fe from a 2010 Tacoma that I swapped into a 1988 Toyota pickup. it has been completely problem free up until a few days ago, I accidentally got the ecu and the immobilizer module wet. the immobilizer ecu has basically died, (donor truck was a Canadian truck with an immobilizer) the truck will crank and run for 2 seconds before the immobilizer kills fuel and spark. I opted to swap in a different ECU from a U.S. truck without an immobilizer but I cant get them to work. I have tried 2 ECUs, one from a '09 automatic and one from a '10 manual. when I plug in either of those 2 ecus it will crank, and fire the injectors but it wont get spark, no codes set on either of them and the engine light does turn on. I have verified all the wiring to the ECU connectors are good, cam and crank sensors both ohm out good. I have good power and ground to all coils, I even hooked up an oscilloscope to the IGT signal to coil #1 with the old ECU, I can see the correct signal getting sent to the coil before the immobilizer kills spark, but with both of the junkyard ECUs I have tried I get nothing from the IGT signal. did I really get 2 bad ECUs from the junkyard or am I missing something

Did you unplug the Transponder Key ECU just to be sure it isn't fooling with the non immobilizer PCM?

Are you sure you are getting the correct PCM's for that engine?
It's odd it runs off the original one but not the replacement, I don't think the Canada engine wiring is any different other than having the immobilizer.

yes I have checked the part numbers. the origional ecu is 89661-04E80, its for a 2010 2trfe, manual 4wd truck. the replacement one I have is 89661-04e70 its for a 2010 2tr-fe, manual 2wd without anti-theft. the vin registered in the new ecu is 5textcn4az709698. when I did the engine swap all the wiring for the 4wd stuff was disconnected and depinned from the ECU connector so the 2wd vs 4wd shouldn't matter. I also paid for a subscription to TIS and verified that everything is correct per toyotas schematics.

I don't know, I mean theoretically it should work. Are you sure it was actually the immobilizer keeping the old PCM from running the truck? I have some scanner screenshots here from when I was doing a little experimenting with the immobilizer system for research, it's on a 4.0L but I'd imagine the data would be the same.
    Is it setting any codes?

Do you have a multichannel scope that you can use to look at cam and crank signals?
I don't have known good signals for the 2TR-FE other than what Toyta provides but I may be able to find some.

I do have a multichannel scope but I really haven't dug into the cam or crank sensor as both the tach and the engine speed show approximately 200rpm when cranking. It also has injector pulse when cranking. I am 90% sure its a antitheft problem with the old ecu as it will fire and run for approximately 3-5 seconds before spark is killed and if I cycle the key off for a few seconds and start it again it will run again for 3-5 seconds and die. both the original ECU and immobilizer ECU had significant corrosion from water that I didn't know was leaking onto it, so I don't trust either of them to be reliable anymore. Unfortunately I no longer have access to a "good" scanner so I cant say for sure that there are not anti-theft codes set and my crappy Bluetooth obd II scanner doesn't read the immobilizer ECU

Kinda weird, on my truck when the immobilizer can't read the key it won't even try to start.
Is the PCM setting any codes?

both the old and new ecu did have a few codes set but they were for secondary air injection and evap stuff(I dont have a evap canister or the secondary air injection pump hooked up). nothing that should cause it to not run. p0453 p1613 p2433 and both the new and old ECU had these codes set.

I don't know, the 2.7L trucks don't have an immobilizer in the US but I don't see why a US PCM wouldn't work in a Canadian truck.
Being a swap kinda complicates things, but you said it was running before.

Did you take the Immobilizer ECU apart and clean it up just to see if it starts working again?

    @Bishop84 any thoughts?

I always wondered what the ECM signal is form the Transponder to the Body ECU.
The iMI and IMO. I’m pretty sure it is more complicated than “power / no power”.
But that seems to be the input need to “disarm” the system.

I cleaned it but its so heavily corroded there is no saving it imo. I wanted to try swapping the immobilizer ecu for another one but it looks like only a dealership can program a key to the immobilizer, and no toyota dealership would be willing to tackle electrical problems on an engine swapped truck even with a 500 foot pole lol. the dumb thing is this truck has been super reliable with this engine swap up until Thursday. I want to ditch the immobilizer as the only thing it does is add a potential failure point to my truck.

I think on these systems it's a challenge/response, the PCM sends the Transponder Key ECU a signal and if a valid key is read the Transponder Key ECU sends a signal back to the PCM that is based on the signal it received.
At least that's how I understand it.

unfortunately this is as in depth as Toyota goes as far as describing how the immobilizer works. this was pulled right from TIS "When the transponder key ECU detects that the unlock warning switch is ON, the ECU provides current to the transponder key coil and produces a faint electric wave. A transponder chip in the key grip receives the wave. Upon receiving the wave, the transponder chip outputs a key ID code signal. The transponder key coil receives this signal, the transponder key amplifier amplifies it, and then the signal is transmitted to the transponder key ECU. The transponder key ECU matches the key's ID code with the vehicle's ID code, which was previously registered in the transponder key ECU. If the ID codes match, the transponder key ECU turns OFF the security indicator. Then when the ignition key cylinder is turned, the code match results are sent through the transponder key ECU to the ECM. After the identification results show that the key's ID code matches the vehicle's ID code and the transponder key ECU has confirmed their match, the immobiliser system is canceled and the engine starting controls (fuel injection control and ignition control) enter standby mode." and yes toyota really did misspell immobilizer in their own service literature

I don't really have any other ideas, @Bishop84 is the only one I know of that might know a bit more about the system.

    Plus, he is in Canada.
So he might know if there is a difference in U.S. vs Canadian ECMs?

I'm kinda confused, so the 2TR was swapped with full 2010 harness and computers. You plugged in a 2010 non-immobilizer ecu and it wont run right?

I don't see any listings for models without immobilizers, are you simply unplugging the immobilizer ecu and hoping it works?

Only 2005 2TR shows no chip key. Every other model on has chip key. So unless you get a new immobilizer ECU I don't think it will work without it.

You don't need a dealer to program the new immobilizer ECU, you simply install it, do the hand shake (tc to cg for 30 mins) and let auto registration do its job.

It must be a Canadian thing, 2TR Tacoma's in the US don't have an immobilizer or at least I've never seen one that had it.
I know you can register the PCM using the jumper wire method but I thought the Transponder Key ECU had to have a scan tool to register the keys to the replacement one.

The engine swap was done and the only computers I swapped was the ECU and the immobilizer ecu. Believe it or not the ecu didn't care that no other modules were connected. From my research all u.s. 2.7 trucks left the factory without an immobilizer, only Canadian 2.7 trucks had them. My donor was a Canadian truck so I bought a ecu from a u.s. I ran the vin number that was attached to the ecu that I bought in TIS and under the options list it does not list an immobilizer. I ran the vin from my Canadian donor truck and it was listed as having an immobilizer.

New transponder ecus go straight into auto registration mode.

You can program 4 keys with no tech stream.

It’s confusing and the 2nd feels like a dinosaur when I’m reading about this haha
