    Hey Guys,
The other day I noticed a rough start on my 2009 4 cyl. when my engine was cold. I could feel the engine shaking and then it would correct after 20 seconds or so and run just fine. I just hit 107,000 miles so I thought it could be the plugs (since they have never been changed before). The next morning it did the same thing and my check engine light came on along with the traction control light. That evening, after reading some threads on here, I changed the plugs (they were pretty worked), cleaned the MAF sensor and the throttle body too. Afterward, it fired up perfectly so I was almost certain I fixed the issue. My check engine turned off as well. Fast forward 2 days later and I noticed a little shaking again this morning! Hope its not a bad head gasket. Any thoughts? Thanks

Thanks for the link. Ok just ran it this morning with the coolant cap off. Had to wait about 5 mins for it to rise. Not much bubble action even after 10 mins..... should I move on to check the coil pack? Is there anyway to pull the previous code if my check engine light is off now?

Hope it's not your problem, but look up secondary air injection system failures.....

I don't suppose your using a oil filter that does not have an anti drain back valve do you?

Just had the same issue with my 05. The codes should still be stored unless they were cleared with a scanner. A $35 scanner at Walmart will read them, or many auto parts stores do it for free.

Mine read p0301 and was the fuel injector.

Ok I got the codes: P0300 PO301 P0302. I only use Fram oil filters and they do have anti drain valves. Been running regular 87 fuel and just put in a can of sea foam today. Still no improvement.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately this morning it was a little chilly for SoCal standards and the rough start didn't correct like the past few days. In fact the check engine light was flashing and my truck was gimping as I tried to drive to work! I pulled over, stopped the engine, and tried to restart. Now the check engine light is solid and was able to get to work. I'll pull codes this evening and let you guys know. On another note, I washed the engine bay using directions on this forum and now my belts and/or pulleys sound like shit! Tried lubing bearings but still not right. AGGGHHHHHH!!

Let's see ..... Common with cold, Brakes and rough running for only a limited time .... ??? I'd check for a vacuum leak. I've had a cold affected vacuum booster, Vac hoses that leak at the attachment points (As they age or are cracked) or possibly a partially blocked vac line (i.e. foreign matter in the hose causing a delay in vac pressure changes in the system.

Also, since you were in the plug wires - recheck connections + wait until dark out and open the hood to check for spark leakage. Older wires may cause the crossfires after they have been moved and disturbed.

Hopefully you find the cause! BTW...you might want to look at using the factory Toyota oil filters. You can get them online from Amazon even with shipping for much cheaper than fram filters...and they are much higher quality than fram.

I tried swapping coil 1 & 2 and still get the cylinder 1 misfire. It has been starting up like shit the past week but runs fine when warm. I think I'm gonna cave and take it in to my mechanic. He said it would be rare for an injector to act up at 110k miles on a taco. Thanks for the tip on the toyota factory filters, I'll definitely be stocking up.

I would swap plugs 1 and 4 and see if it changes, not that bad to swap injectors either

Kinda sounds like you got a coil pack on the way out. I mean my truck has been unhappy cause it was -20 and I left it outside but what's chilly in socal probably makes me sweat and wear shorts lol... but interested in how this turns out good luck op

Mechanic took a look today...He think the coils are more than likely the issue. Or possibly a burnt valve or even worse, a head gasket. He swapped 1&2 w/ 3&4 and cleared codes. We will find out tomorrow morning if the codes follow the coils. Fingers crossed for the best case scenario.
