Hey all, my original 1GR-FE head gasket blew and I am in the process of swapping it out with a donor, along with new gaskets. My mechanic has successfully swapped the engine, went to test, and is receiving an ECM fault. I've yet to get the code to research but, wanted to get some advise in advance. I've also seen issues where the ECM or ECU needs re-programming.

    Has anyone encountered similar issues?

    Thanks in advance.

If the ECU was swapped then the new ECU will need to go thru a learning process for the immobilizer to recognize it. Are you using your original ECU?

Also which ECM fault is your mechanic receiving? Codes would be helpful

Excuse my ignorance, not sure where the ECU is located. If it's located inside the cab, then it's the original. If it's on the engine, then it's the new one.

Mechanic says it turns over, just won't fire up.

I'd go back and verify all the grounds are connected and tight, there's multiple grounds on the back of the passenger side cylinder head. Not uncommon for them to be missed during a swap.

Its located inside the cab so there is likely another issue at play.

I really need the fault code. He's a part-time mechanic and is out of town at the moment. Ima go down to the shop once he returns.

    Update;
Engine now starts and then dies after 2-3 seconds with no error codes. So far the following has been checked:
    1. Fuel pump resistor
    2. Fuel pump relay
    3. Fuel pressure is good

I've seen posts where people had this issue and it turned out to be a security feature. My mechanic doesn't have a key fob with a good battery. Is there another way to rule this out?

If the security light next to the clock isn't flashing with the key on it's most likely not a security issue.

Did the ECU get swapped out, or is it the original one that came with your truck?

As I understand, it's the ECU that came with the newer engine. Forgive my ignorance, is the ECU on the engine or in the cab?

It is in the cab, and it is basically behind and to the right of the glove box.

Why was the newer ECU swapped in? Just because it came with the engine? If so, swap the original one back in, and problem solved.

Then it's the original ECU, it was not swapped. Sorry for the confusion.

Now that we have that figured out, it should not be an immobilizer problem. Very slim chance.

Get the battery in the FOB replaced. Easy.

My ideas keep leaning towards checking the crank position sensor. Which is behind the A/C compressor.

It could be anything though. A scan tool of some kind, could give some clues.

I have the truck back and have tried resetting the ECU. This did not fix the issue. The truck will crank up immediately and idle to 2100 RPM and then immediately dies.

I also noticed this plug. Does anyone know where this goes?

Gona have to do some testing, do you have a scan tool that can read codes and data?

Update, it will rev up and stays on for longer until it finally cuts off.
