Hi my name is Cody and i recently bought a 2005 Toyota Tacoma 4.0l v6 vvti trd sport auto crew cab short box 4x4. The guy i bought it off said it have a blown rod in the motor. After getting it home and having a look at the motor and putting an OBD-ll reader on the motor, nothing came up as an error. Also the oil pressure is at 28.5-29 kpa at startup. so trying to figure out where the noise is coming from because don't want to get a new motor if not needed. Have a short video of the noise was wondering if it could be a loose torque converter with the auto trans let me know what you think!!!
    Here is the video

That sounds like a rod bearing.

Just a heads up...you're going to catch all kinds of flack for the Fram Oil Filter...and...it may sound a little elementary, but how is the oil level/condition of oil in the engine.

Pretty good oil pressure for an engine with a "blown rod".

That definitely sounds like the double knock of a failed rod bearing.

Sounds like a rod knock to me. Bearing probably spun and got chewed up

Thank for all the reply's! I will post in psi from now on. The truck is new to me and I'm going to make it my daily driver I have not done anything to it yet but will be starting this weekend with a mechanic.
The oil looks old but the engine is full of oil and nothing is leaking.

I guess it’s good to know someone who will help you rebuild the bottom end.

Drain the oil and look for metal flakes. If it is glittery, then your easiest option is to swap in a newer used engine. Literally the easiest.

If you’re on the fence about the engine replacement, consider the ‘05 4.0s had a head gasket design that was replaced in mid ‘06.

The older head gasket design MAY fail at some point in the future. Search the forum for more info..

    Good Luck!

If it's just a rod bearing, would it not be easier just to replace said bearing? Or are you assuming it's catastrophic?

Depending on how many rods are knocking, will mean that many rods will need to be replaced as well those bearings. Which also means that the crank journals will damaged beyond usage.

The crank will have to turned, or replaced. Block and heads will have to be thoroughly cleaned. Which means full disassembly.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
Had a similar sound with my van. Turned out to be the timing belt hydraulic tensioner blew and the timing belt tensioner pulley was slapping around. an drove like hell because the timing belt jumped a few teeth. Mechanic immediately said rod knock. We thought we'd need a new van.

    Never know, might get lucky.

Was driving cross country and my motor was sounding like that at a stop. Not as loud a your video though. Turned out it was the two lower belt pulleys.

Nope. Depending on the weight of the oil used, as well as up to temp, it will be between ~17-29.

I don't trust that link one bit. If that engine light comes on, you've no time to shut it down and salvage the engine.

Just a question out of curiosity, although it may help the OP with a diagnosis. Would a compression check show a bad rod and or bearing?
