It looks like my 2005 Tacoma double cab qualifies for a frame replacement. Given that the cost of labor for any additional work unrelated to the frame replacement will be minimized, I am considering replacing my engine (170,000 miles) for a new one... Sure, I could get a lot more miles out of the one I have, but it's not very often that I can get a new engine for little additional cost for labor, so I need to at least consider it... I have only begun a brief "Google" search for 2005 Tacoma engines and have mostly come up with "Used" options.
Can folks give me some suggestions for sources for engines besides the Toyota dealership itself? Should I only consider an engine via the Service Dept. of the dealer?
    What about OEM engines?
Also, what should I expect to reasonably pay for a new engine?

(I bought the truck with 145,000 miles and the transmission had just been replaced, so I am not considering a new transmission at this time).

Best bet is probably going to be trying to find a low mileage used... might be a somewhat reasonable choice to get a newer model year engine as the 05s have common head gasket failures and many just replace the engine once it fails.

Shit... unless you're doing an engine swap... I'm not sure I see the point.

You could pick up a used engine... but who knows how well it's been maintained, driven hard, etc. You could end up having a worse motor.

Along the same lines, does anyone know if there is an online reference that allows you to see what years of engines and transmissions are compatible? The 4.0 has undergone changes that might not be so easy to integrate. The manual transmission should be easier. At some point I want to find a low mileage used replacement for my 07 engine and tranny.

As mentioned above, a new engine is going to cost a lot more than you think. Even a rebuilt with a guarantee will cost a pretty penny. 170,000 miles on any well maintained Toyota is nothing. I've gotten 300K - 400K miles out of every one I've owned.

Save your $$$ - keep the engine you have.

Why swap out an engine that you know is good and you know the history of for one that has an unknown history and unknown treatment? Makes no sense to me, unless you paid a pretty penny for a completely rebuilt one. Also, I can't see Toyota agreeing to swap in a new engine for you when there's nothing wrong with your current one. That's a lot of work they don't have to do

There was a very low mileage 4.0 on the classifieds here a while back in the Dallas area. I had over 300,000 on my 2001 Tacoma before my son totaled it out. I purchased the 2007 with 190,000 miles and never once have I worried about the engine. I believe if you service these motors they will last up to 500,000. That is my goal when I purchased this truck was to drive it until I reach 500,000. I am on the side that would keep my original engine for the time being. Why throw money away when it may not even be needed. You never know what will happen with your truck. Rick

If you’re going to go to all the trouble/cost involved with a new 4.0, you might as well find a low mile 4.7 with tranmission and figure out how to fit that into your Taco.

Same transmission. Only need engine and bell housing and use 4Runner V8 motor mounts and gauges/ECU. Cake

Thanks for the feedback. That definitely helps me to back away from the idea.
Assuming Toyota gives the final approval to the local dealer service department, and sends out a new frame, I am not going to consider a new or rebuilt engine. There are still a lot of other items I will need to consider and that make a lot more sense both practically and financially (i.e. fuel pump, fuel filter, and cap mount bushings).
