    I've seen I don't know how many threads about this over the years, including one recently in the 2016 section, so I thought I'd explain. In the past (pre-1990's), Toyota had a system of axle codes common across all models and years, but with more and more axles being developed, it was no longer a viable system, and so a new one was introduced. The new system (used since then on all new models introduced after 1990 or so) cannot be applied to all vehicles, and so is much harder to define. The first letter is the ring gear size, generally A is the smallest ring gear size, B would be larger, and so on. The second 2 numbers are the gear ratio, starting at 01 and going up based on ratios used on that model. The last letter is the options the differential has, often A will be an open diff, B will be an LSD or locker and so on.

    These are different for every model! A01A on a 2002 4Runner will be a completely different differential than A01A on a Tacoma or even on a 2003 4Runner!

    As the 2016 Tacoma is still the same frames/type as the 2005 to 2016, the axle codes go on from there.

    A = 8.0"/205mm
    B = 8.8"/225mm

    01 = 3.583:1
    02 = 4.100:1
    03 = 3.153:1
    04 = 3.727:1
    05 = 3.307:1
    06 = 4.300:1
    07 = 3.909:1

    A = Open
    B = E-Locker
    C = Limited Slip Differential

    My 2017 offroad is A04D. Last letters only go A-C. Anyone know about my code?

    Your signature shows you have 1997 Tacoma. The original post states the axle codes are only 2005+

    Since posting this, I have come across a couple of inconsistencies I haven't worked out yet. There are a couple year/combinations that seem to be different for some reason.

    A04 is right, as it is an 8-inch 3.73:1 for a 2015 Tacoma TRD OR. The C being used for an e-locker is an interesting one though. I'd be interested to see some others from that time frame to compare to.

    The last letter being an A is definitely an option diff, and B/C/... are going to be something else (LSD, locker, etc.).

    I'm still looking into this further, I wish Toyota had lookup charts for axle codes.

    Understood. I can assure you that's a factory TRD OR truck and that axle code is correct, just so you know.

    It is not uncommon for people to slap TRD OR or Sport stickers on trucks, it is a little more uncommon for people to actually follow through with swapping in an elocker axle but it's not unheard of. Still if enough people chime in and have the same code/combo then winner!

    I'd wager 3rd gens are going to be different codes. I mean they're certainly more leaky than 1st or 2nd gens.

    Yeah I get that, I've been driving and working on Tacomas since 1996. All I was saying is that my truck is a real TRD OR, I have the window sticker, it has all the supporting options etc..
