I'm trying to locate cab specs as well as performance specs from 2004 vs. 2005 Access cab 4wd (4 cyl and 6 cyl). Can someone point me to where that may be located on the forum?

    Thanks in advance!

Having owned both, the second gen is much much more convenient

Thanks Vantage. I found a review site and looked up both. What pros/cons did you see between the two?

I've owned both, so i'll throw my $0.02 in.

    2004 Prerunner extra cab
Pro: very reliable 3.4 v6 (sold at 120,000 miles with no issues), smaller truck when i was a youth and didn't have a family, longer bed, 19-22 mpg around town/highway
Con: lacked power in mountains, mine wasn't 4x4, 4-speed transmission

2005 Prerunner double cab TRD Offroad
Pro: more powerful 4.0 (reliable, still), larger truck for when i was older and had a family + dogs, electronic rear locker on TRD Offroad model
Cons: 18 mpg, small bed space

    I've owned both 1st & 2nd gen.
I don't have actual specs here - but just from experience.

1st Gen - Smaller in both width & length. Extended Cab without opening rear doors. 6 cylinder is 3.4L. Metal Bed. Be aware of rusted frames (rusting from inside out). Similar gas mileage as 2nd gen (at least, I never saw much of a difference). Less towing capacity. Felt like a more heavy duty truck.

2nd Gen - larger in both width & length. Access cab has rear opening doors. 6cylinder is 4.0L. Composite Bed. Also be aware of rusted frames. Similar gas mileage as 2nd gens. (at least, I never saw much of a difference). More towing capacity than 1st gens. More plastic, lightweight, and not as beefy as the 1st gens.

I loved my 1st gen. It was a 96 and I owned it for 5 years (50K miles). I abused the crap out of it on the trails and modified all sorts of things.

I love my 2nd gen mostly for the larger size. I've never offroaded with it but I've loaded the crap out of the bed over & over again. It's never complained.

What are you concerned about with comparing both trucks?

The 2001 Was better offroad, a little smaller for parking, ultra reliable 3.4L engine.

My 2011 is just better. Larger interior, which is more comfortable. More power. A little better gas mileage. More towing. Still great offroad. Still a bulletproof engine.

The only reason to get a first gen is price, or you want a small truck.
Second gen is better in every other way.

Thanks so much for the info. I'm just wanting to compare cab and bed space as well as HP for each. Also, I've read somewhere about a frame campaign related to rust that Toyota did back in 2010 on the 1st Gen Tacoma. Is there a site somewhere or someone here that is able to pull service history? Thanks everyone!
