Just bought a 2004 Toyota Tacoma for a hunting truck and it was listed as a PreRunner 4x4. It has prerunner has the tailgate but came from factory with 4x4 per the carfax. Anyone know about this? TRD package as well

That's a 4x4 that someone replaced the tail gate on with one from a Prerunner. Or they just put a Prerunner emblem on it. Either way, that is a 4x4. Has the 4wd lever next to the transmission shifter.

Prerunners were all 2wd from factory. They were basically just 4x4s without the 4wd components.

Tail gate theft isn't uncommon so my money would be on the fact that the original tail gate got stolen and the previous owner found one in the same color off a Prerunner. That or the original tail gate got damaged somehow and replaced

Yeah and 3rd gens too. Its actually less common on 1st gens because the bolts take more time to remove, as I understand it the 2nd/3rd gen tail gates basically just pop right off if they aren't secured on somehow. But even the 1st gen one just takes a few minutes if you have a screwdriver

3rd gens require some tools. 2nd gen can be removed in like 2 seconds

AirMax- it’s all factory, the carfax and original window sticker says 4x4. I think the tailgate was replaced.
