    Hi All,

My 2011 Tacoma has lost compression in the number 4 cylinder. It has 268,000 miles, and I don't feel like spending a ton of money on it, unnecessarily. I have found a 2003 Tacoma with the same engine, and want to know if there is any impediment in using this 2003 engine in my 2011, and what might be needed.

I do have the ability to make the swap, and yes, I have been looking for 2005-2015 engines but here in rural Vermont, it is slim pickings. I just want to make sure before I make an offer to the seller.

    Thanks,
    Jon

An 03 (1st gen) 4 cyl engine would be a 2RZ-FE (2.4L) or 3RZ-FE (2.7L), while they would probably bolt up they are completely different from the 2TR-FE (2.7L) in 2nd gen trucks and would not work.

No doubt, and thank you for your response. However, from what I understand, is that the 2TR-FE was actually used in 2003 models. The VIN from the seller confirms that it is a 2.7L but not 2TR-FE or 3RZ-FE, which I am still waiting for confirmation back.

the 2TR-FE was never used in a 1st gen Tacoma, it didn't even exist in anything until 04.

Engines in Tacoma's through the years are as follows:

    1st gen (95.5-04) Tacoma engines:

    2.4L (2RZ-FE) 4 cyl (2wd only)
    2.7L (3RZ-FE) 4 cyl (4wd & Pre-runner)
    3.4L (5VZ-FE) V6 (4wd & Pre-runner)

    2nd Gen (05-15) Tacoma engines:

    2.7L (2TR-FE) (Single VVT) 4 cyl
    4.0L (1GR-FE) (Single VVT) V6

    3rd Gen (16-23) Tacoma engines:

    2.7L (2TR-FE) (Dual VVT) 4 cyl
    3.5L (2GR-FKS) V6

They do not interchange between generations unless you want to go to the trouble of basically swapping the entire drivetrain and electrical system as well.

Thank you, and up until I started this post, I thought I was aware of the different generations and compatibility. It wasn't until I started searching for compatibility amongst the different generations just to double tap that I found the following info:

    https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=125

This of course drove my curiosity and hope to ask. The seller did confirm that the engine is a 3RZ-FE, so I will not consider it.

Thank you very much for your valuable input to my question. I'm on track now with only 2nd Generation consideration.
