I wish I could put a sad face in the title, but I'm at a bit of a crossroad. My 2002 Tacoma might be done for me. The clutch went out among other things and this truck that I beat the hell out of just isn't worth fixing at this point. From my mechanic whom I trust very much has all the fixes that it needs to run again at $2,400. I'm not in the realm of fixing this myself. The truck is 4WD, has the TRD package and has 195,000 miles on it. Paint is not very good, but does have a good stereo and tool box :) Anyways, what is it worth to sell right now as is? All responses are appreciated. I live in Northern California. Thanks.

$2,400 compared to what for another vehicle.

True. I just feel its time to move on from it. Just trying to get a price to ask for it if I choose to sell as is.

So what would it be worth if the repairs were made?

I see you live in California. Will the truck still pass smog? If yes, then keep it!

Yes it will pass smog. Its a good truck, but the cost to fix it vs what it is worth is tough to swallow

Can you afford to buy a better vehicle that wont leave you facing the same situation in a matter of months?

I live in norcal/east bay and have owned Toyota trucks for the past 25 years. I suspect your frame is probably in pretty good shape if it's history hasn't deviated much out of CA. Knowing the cost of hiring a mechanic for repairs, the $2,400 seems pretty darn cheap in this area. I do my own wrenching but everytime I get tired of doing it myself I just go out and get a couple of estimates from independent shops, which are almost always too high to stomach. I also know that your little truck can bring a pretty high price in this area. I've often thought about selling mine but unless I upgrade to gen2 I probably wouldn't get anything else. I suspect you can get $7,500-$8,500 with a little cleaning and good presentation. Don't laugh. I've got personal observations from friends in the area who sold theirs for $10k+ with bad paint and some repair work to be made. Your miles are not excessive. If the body is straight and the frame is good, you should have people beating a path to your door. Just get cash and meet them at the bank to check for counterfeit bills. I'd be interested to see if others in the area will confirm the prices they are seeing.

BTW, clutch replacement is pretty reasonably priced for these trucks. Sounds like you have gotten tired of it and want to move on. Throw a few buck into it and get it running so a potential buyer can test drive it, then collect your money and move on. (see my post above re potential price point).

Thank you for the insight. I don't really want to move on from it, but reality is I need a bigger truck and just trying to be financially responsible with all of it.

I'd be tempted depending on the price, but you'd probably get a good price (more than I can afford) even listing it as a mechanics special. I'd try posting it on CL for KBB's fair value and see what offers you get. Like Taco! said, you'll probably be surprised.

Someone handy might have her fixed up in a week. If you come up with a price lmk. I'm in the East Bay as well.

I want a 4x4 so I can get out there with MJ and the rest of the guys. :D

Your truck is valuable, especially where we are. Being financially responsible is fixing up this truck for the little cost it takes to get it back up and running. A small repair like this is far better than monthly payments.

I suggest you look at some replacements before you give away a trusted platform. Nothing holds value better.

You SURE you can't take on the clutch? It can just about be done sitting on your butt under a 4x4.

    ah, that's different.

I would imagine whatever the condition of eeverything else, it's prob. going to be worth twice as much running as not.

Aside from the clutch, what's the other work that has to be done?

I can understand someone without much experience not wanting to do a clutch job, it's all nuts and bolts but it's definitely a bigger job than doing your own spark plugs or suspension.

At $2400 I imagine 1/3 - 1/2 of that cost is the clutch job, since the transmission has to be dropped it's time consuming and tends to cost quite a bit in labor when you have a shop do it.

But that leaves another $1200 or more in other work that it needs, which could be stuff that you are capable of doing on your own and saving some money.

Do you have an itemized estimate from the shop as to what they recommend that you could post?
